Faculty

Thomas G. Allison, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Allison is Associate Professor in Medicine at the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. He is also a Consultant to Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine for the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. He is the Director of the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Laboratory and the Chair of the Education Committee at the Cardiovascular Health Clinic. Dr. Allison is widely published in peer reviewed journals. He is an active member of the American Heart Association for which he serves on the Epidemiology Council and the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism.

Dr. Allison received his Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology and his Doctorate in Exercise Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also earned a Master of Arts in Health, Recreation, and Physical Education from the same institution. He is an Elected Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine.

Joseph G. Murphy, M.D.

Dr. Murphy is Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He is Director of the Cardiology Invasive Specialist program at the Mayo School of Health Sciences. Dr Murphy is the Director of the Mayo Clinic Scientific Press and Chair of the Section of Scientific Publication at the Mayo Clinic. He is also Chair of the Mayo Foundation Publications Committee.

Dr. Murphy graduated from University College Cork in Ireland, where he also completed a Medical and Surgical Internship in the Professional Department at the University College Cork Hospital. He was Senior House Officer in Rotation in General Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland Medical School at St. Laurence’s Hospital, Dublin Teaching Hospital. He was Tutor/Registrar in General Medicine at the Medical School, University of Dublin, Trinity College at the Dublin Teaching Hospital. Dr. Murphy was Senior House Officer and Registrar in Cardiology and General Medicine at Mater Misericordiae Hospital at Dublin Teaching Hospital. He completed a research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School and fellowships in Clinical and Invasive Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Murphy completed a Doctorate in Medicine in Cardiology by Thesis at the National University of Ireland.

Program Purpose / Objectives

Statement of Purpose: To review the healthcare management of adults in a clinical setting, with special emphasis on cardiac disease and prevention.
Preliminary Objectives for Activity: At the conclusion of this CME activity, participants should be able to:
• Discuss adjunctive therapy following acute myocardial infarction
• Compare the historical and modern definitions of congestive heart failure
• Review the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndromes
• Discuss why myocardial infarction in the elderly results in worse outcomes
• Review trends in risk factor for CHD
• Review effective strategies for treating metabolic syndrome
• Assess CHD risk in patients
• Recommend the best diet for CHD prevention
• Compare the polypill versus polymeal approach to preventing CHD
• Review current developments in pulmonary hypertension
• Identify the three principal presentations of unstable angina
