Faculty

Thomas M. File Jr., M.D., M.Sc., MACP, FIDSA, FCCP
Dr. Thomas File is Chair of the Infectious Disease Division at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio, USA and Professor of Internal Medicine, Master Teacher, and Chair of the Infectious Disease Section at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio. After graduating from medical school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1972, Dr. File received his Master of Science in medical microbiology from Ohio State University in Columbus, in 1977, where he also completed his fellowship in infectious diseases.

Dr. File is a Master of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow and member of the Board of Directors of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is President-elect of the Board of Directors of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and is a member of many other professional societies, including the American Society for Microbiology, the American Thoracic Society (ATS), and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

He is a past Chairperson of the Standards and Practice Guidelines Committee of the IDSA and has also served as a member of the IDSA and ATS committees for guidelines on community-acquired pneumonia. He is a member of the IDSA guidelines panels for Hospital-acquired Pneumonia, Influenza, and Sinusitis. He a past-president of the Infectious Disease Society of Ohio; a past president of the Northeastern Ohio Task Force on AIDS.

Michael J. Tan, M.D., FACP, FIDSA , Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy; Clinical Physician Infectious Diseases and HIV, Summa Health System, Akron, Ohio.

Dr. Tan is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOMP). At NEOUCOMP, he is co-course director of the Infection and Immunity Course and vice-chair of the Infectious Disease Section of the Principles in Medicine Course. Dr. Tan is Medical Director of Summa Physicians Infectious Disease at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio, where he is also a Clinical Physician, Infectious Diseases and HIV. Dr. Tan is board certified in infectious disease and internal medicine. He obtained his medical degree from the Northeastern Universities College of Medicine and completed his residency training at Summa Health System. He then completed a fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida.

Dr Tan is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA). He is the Membership Chair and Vice President for the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Physicians and has also been appointed to the ACP Membership Management Advisory Committee.

Program Purpose / Objectives

Statement of Purpose: The purpose of this CME activity is to outline the management of infectious challenges in clinical practice, including emerging infections and antibiotic/preventive choices.
Following attendance at this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the new vaccination recommendations for 2011
  • Outline the CDC prevention guidelines for STDs
  • Discuss the increasing need for antiviral agents in the US today
  • Recognize the increasing significance of fungal infections
  • Outline three options for treating GAS carriers
  • Describe emerging resistance to problem pathogens
  • Summarize the guidelines for managing community-acquired pneumonia
  • Review the history of MRSA
  • List the characteristics of MSRA, the new C diff strain and SARS
