Faculty

Chris Kottenstette, PA-C, is President and CEO of Your Care, a Healthcare Consulting and Systems Integration Company; President and Founder of the PAs in Pain Medicine Special Interest Group of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA); Founding Member of the Board of Advisors for the American Society of Pain Educators; and a Past-President of the Colorado Academy of Physician Assistants. His skills in Quality Management earned him an appointment to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2003.

Currently, he uses his expertise in both clinical and advanced diagnostic and interventional medicine as a practicing Physician Assistant with Denver Pain Management, in Denver, Colorado treating a variety of painful conditions. He speaks regularly on topics of pain medicine, has expertise in legal and regulatory medicine, and has lobbied for legislative change both locally and nationally. He has a special interest in Medical Information Technologies and in Total Quality Management as it relates to Healthcare. Mr. Kottenstette graduated from the Utah Physician Assistant Program (UPAP) at the University of Utah Medical School in Salt Lake City, Utah



Sloan B. Karver, M.D.
Dr. Sloan Beth Karver was previously Assistant Professor of Oncological Sciences at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. She obtained Board Certification by the Hospice and Palliative Care Board in 2004 and became a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2008. In addition she holds certifications in Family Medicine. She has extensive Hospice experience having previously served as the Chief Medical Officer of a not-for-profit Hospice. In addition, Karver was the past president and current board member of Project GRACE.

She recently was the lead investigator on the “Methylnaltrexone for Opioid-Induced Constipation in Advanced Illness” which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine this past year and has presented the study in the United States, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and Chile among others.

She has been instrumental in starting a palliative care research program at Moffitt Cancer Center, as well as accrediting and expanding the palliative care fellowship with the University of South Florida. She is a published author on end-of-life issues, as well as pain and symptom management. Dr. Karver lectures nationally and internationally on the same topics.

Program Purpose / Objectives

Preliminary Objectives for Activity. At the conclusion of this CME activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the difference between Sensitivity and Specificity when it comes to evidence based medicine
  • Review the occurrence of chronic pain in America
  • List some adverse effects of pain
  • Describe the use of x-rays and imaging in pain
  • Discuss rational pharmacotherapy in pain management
  • Review ways to positively interact with difficult patients
  • Appreciate the complexities of the physiology of pain
  • Apply physiologic principles to the other lectures in the series
  • Realize the significance of the pain experience in patients' lives
  • Be familiar with the various pharmacological classes and treatments involved in the treatment of acute and chronic pain
  • Apply knowledge of non-pharmacologic approaches to the treatment of pain
  • Comprehend and apply the risk screening when considering the use of scheduled medications
  • Build on the information presented in the lecture series to change practice behaviors when dealing with chronic pain patients
Conference Sessions generally take place on days at sea (as itinerary allows), giving you plenty of time to enjoy your meals, evenings and ports of call with your companion, family and friends.
