Faculty

Frederic Platt, M.D. Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine; Associate Director, Foundations of Doctoring; University of Colorado School of Medicine, Coordinator of Communication Curriculum; Regional Consultant, Bayer Institute for Health Care Communication; Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine; Fellow, American College of Physicians; Fellow, American Academy on Physician and Patient.

Dr. Platt is Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. As the Associate Director of Foundations of Doctoring he created the communication curriculum currently in use at the University of Colorado. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare. He is the regional consultant for the Institute for Healthcare Communication. Dr. Platt received a BA and MA in mathematics from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois and his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. He did a residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago and then, after a tour of duty in the U.S. army, completed the training in Denver at Presbyterian Hospital and the University of Colorado. He has practiced general internal medicine in Denver for 40 years. Dr. Platt has written four books and many articles about communication in medicine, and keeps busy otherwise playing tournament bridge, reading, and writing. He lives in Denver with his wife, Connie, who keeps him pointed in the right directions.



Monica Broome, M.D.

Dr. Monica Broome is the Director of the new Communication Skills Program for University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Her interest is in physician patient communication. The scope of this program includes the undergraduate, graduate, and faculty development levels.

Dr. Broome completed a three year fellowship under the Director of Education Development in the Department of Medical Education, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. During her fellowship she completed programs in the Macy Institute for Health Communication Curriculum Development and is certified faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Communication. Her scholarly work includes presentations and workshops nationally for the Association of American Medical Colleges, Society of General Internal Medicine, and Southern Group on Educational Affairs, and internationally for the European Association for Communication in Health Care and International Conference on Communication in Healthcare. She serves on the American College of Physicians Legislative Action Program for Health Care Reform, the Editorial Board of Medical Encounter, and Chaired the Committee on Communication and technology for the 2006 American Academy on Communication in Healthcare Annual Research and Teaching Forum. Dr. Broome co-chaired the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare held in the USA in Miami, October 2009.

Dr. Broome, formerly Dr. Harris, is an alumnus on the University Of Miami School Of Medicine. Her specialty is Internal Medicine for which she has received recognition and accolades from colleagues and patients, including a service award from the State of Virginia Department of Disabled American Veterans. She was the Founder and former Medical Director of the Women’s Veterans Comprehensive Health Program, in Hampton Virginia. Dr. Broome was selected as one of the representatives from the state of Florida to participate in a National Summit on Women’s Veterans Health Issues at the White House which resulted in a position paper for Congress. To continue her interest in promoting women's health, Dr. Broome currently serves on the Institutes for Women's Health Education/Academic Training Subcommittee at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Communication in Healthcare.

Program Purpose / Objectives

The purpose of this CME activity is to allow physicians and other health care providers to improve their communication skills.
Following attendance at this educational activity, participants should be able to:
• Effectively influence patient behavior
• Appropriately disclose unanticipated outcomes
• Enlist patients as active participants in their care
• Identify obstacles to empathy
• Present a model for conducting a medical interview
• Develop a patient-centered interview model
Conference Sessions generally take place during the days at sea (as cruise itinerary allows) to avoid conflicts with Ports of Call or evening entertainment.
