Faculty

Bruce D. Shephard, M.D.
Dr. Shephard is Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley, attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his Ob-Gyn residency at the University of Miami, Florida.

Dr. Shephard is principal author of “The Complete Guide to Women’s Health.” and a frequent speaker and writer on women’s health issues. A 2009 selectee of the Marquis’ Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, he maintains a clinical practice in Tampa and recently served as president of the Hillsborough County Medical Association.

Barry Verkauf, M.D., M.B.A., CPE
Dr. Verkauf is Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Infertility, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of South Florida, College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in new Orleans, Louisiana. he also earned a Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Florida. He completed an internship at Tulane University Department of Surgery, Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Residencies in Gynecology and Obstetrics and Pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was also a fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology.

When in private practice in Tampa, Florida, Dr. Verkauf initiated the first in vitro fertilization program on the west coast of Florida. He is Board Certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He is a Certified Physician Executive by the American College of Physician Executives. He serves as a reviewer for several journals and has authored textbooks in clinical medicine and the business and history of medicine. Dr. Verkauf is a charter member of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Society for Reproductive Surgery, and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology.

Program Purpose / Objectives

The purpose of this CME activity is to provide a review of clinical conditions encountered by the Family Physician and address common gynecological problems.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Understand current evaluation and treatment of infertility
2. Understand assisted reproductive technologies
3. Evaluate sexual dysfunction at the menopause
4. Assess patients for suspected polycystic ovarian syndrome
5. Understand the embryology of genital anatomy, and the causes of clitoral enlargement
6. Understand ICD9s, CPTs, and RVUs as they affect medical reimbursement
7. Assess, utilize and provide objective health information from a range of internet sources
8. Utilize an evidence-based algorithm for managing abnormal pap smears
9. Identify which drugs to avoid, which to use, and which to consider during pregnancy
10. Utilize current, 2010, CDC guidelines in managing STDs
11. Apply current endometrial ablation techniques to the needs of a particular practice setting
12. Apply current hormone therapy guidelines to menopausal patients on an individual basis
13. Evaluate various contraceptive options to provide individualized contraceptive counseling to patients
