Faculty

John Carnes, Ph.D., Private practice, St. Petersburg, Florida; Former Director of Medical Education, Bayfront Health Systems, St. Petersburg, Florida

Dr. Carnes began his career in patient care and medical education approximately 3 decades ago.

He completed his Ph.D. at Indiana State University, and subsequently completed an internship at the Family Medicine Residency at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was on the faculty of that residency until 1985, when he joined the faculty of the Family Medicine Residency at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Department of Family Medicine at the University of South Florida. He was active in the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine, serving as the co-chairman for a national task force on behavioral sciences in family medicine residencies. He developed an interest in trauma, and served as the state coordinator for disaster mental health services in the state of Florida.

He recently completed a 25 year teaching career with Bayfront Health System, where he was Director of Medical Education, and Chairman of the Institutional Research Review Committee. During his tenure, he spoke nationally in the area of psychosocial aspects of geriatric care.

Now in full-time private practice in St. Petersburg, Florida, Dr. Carnes devotes his time to geriatric patient care, and teaching family medicine residents. His clinical interests include the psychological aspects of trauma, behavioral medicine, and geriatrics. He is also a regular speaker for University at Sea and serves on the CME Advisory Committee.

H. James Brownlee, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Brownlee is a Professor of Medicine, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida; Medical Director, Monsour Executive Wellness Center, Tampa, Florida.

After earning his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York, Dr. Brownlee completed his residency training through the Williamsport Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He then completed a teaching fellowship in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Miami in Florida, followed by a geriatric fellowship at the Geriatric Education Center of the University of North Carolina.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Brownlee is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Program Purpose / Objectives

This activity will review behavioral medicine, women’s health issues and office based procedures with a focus on the primary care physician. Preliminary objectives will be announced soon.

Preliminary Topics for Activity
  1. Cardiovascular Disease
    • Discuss the risk factors for cardiovascular disease including metabolic syndrome
    • Describe the American Diabetic Association (ADA) diagnostic guidelines for the diagnosis of Prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, the Joint national Committee on Hypertention (7) guildelines for blood pressure and the National Cholesterol Education Program ATP III guidelines for lipid treatment
    • Explain unstable plaque as a significant cause of cardiovascular events and death
  2. Diagnosing and Treating Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Antidepressant Side Effects
    • Analyze the clinical nuances and differences between these two forms of depression
    • Describe an overview of the benefits and limitations of the various medication classes presently available to treat monopolar and bipolar depression disorders
  3. Diagnosis and Management of Headache
    • Explain the similarities and differences between migraine, tension, cluster and sinus headaches in adults
    • Discuss the pharmacologic therapies for migraince including “abortive” and :preventative” therapy
  4. Osteoporosis in the Older Patient
    • Explaing the prevalence and risk factors associated with osteoporosis
    • Discuss the lifestyle and therapeutic options for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis
  5. Travel Medicine
    • Describe appropriate health preparation for travel through immunizations and travel health kits
    • Review the symptoms and signs of travelers’’ diarrhea, air and cruise travel, jet lag, and altitude illness, and discuss appropriate preventative and acute therapies
    • Provide listings of expert online computer resources for travel related illness
  6. Dementia
    • Define dementia
    • Identify barriers to detection of dementia
  7. Sorting out Confusion
    • Recognize four common underlying problems that present with confusion
  8. Anxiety Disorders in the Elderly
    • Recognize that anxiety in elderly does not have same profile as in young
  9. Things they Never Told You About Grief
    • Describe the normal processes of grief after the death of a loved one
Conference Sessions generally take place during the days at sea (as cruise itinerary allows) to avoid conflicts with Ports of Call or evening entertainment.
