The purpose of this CME activity is to identify and discuss successful methods for mediating and negotiating disputes arising from the delivery of health care
Preliminary Objectives for Activity:
“At the conclusion of this CME activity, participants should be able to:
1. Identify different types of alternative dispute resolution (ADR)
2. Distinguish ADR strategies from traditional litigation
3. Explain interest-based negotiation
4. Explain principled negotiation
5. Distinguish between interest and positional negotiation strategies
6. Outline basic mediation techniques
7. Identify basic negotiation strategies in mediation
8. Apply negotiation strategies to primary provider patient care
9. Describe the use of conflict resolution strategies in consultation liaison services
10. Explore the role of conflict resolution strategies in Medical Ethics Committee Activities
11. Describe the role of mediation in resolving provider patient disputes
12. Recognize the potential of conflict resolution strategies to address other healthcare issues.
