PROGRAM PURPOSE

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a significant health challenge with its increasing prevalence and associated complications. Effective management of T2DM involves a multi-faceted approach encompassing lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, and monitoring strategies. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) has emerged as a pivotal tool in diabetes management, offering real-time insights into glucose dynamics and trends, thereby empowering patients and healthcare providers to make informed decisions.

This comprehensive educational activity aims to equip healthcare professionals with the latest advancements in T2DM management, with a focus on integrating CGM technology into clinical practice. Through a series of interactive sessions, expert faculty will discuss

Faculty

Daniel Cox, PhD

Dr. Daniel J. Cox is a clinical psychologist, diplomat in clinical psychology, and professor of Psychiatry and behavioral medicine, as well as a professor in the department of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Cox has spent much of his professional career as a National Institutes of Health investigator studying how behavior effects blood glucose among adults with type 1 diabetes and how extreme blood glucose effects behavior. He has published over 250 scientific articles and secured over $25 million of research funding.

In 2010, he experienced unexpected weight loss, blurring of his vision, excessive thirst and frequent urination. One night while returning to bed after a trip to the bathroom, it struck him that he had type 2 diabetes. The next morning this was confirmed when going to his office and measuring his blood glucose. Realizing he would prefer not take medication and he was not optimistic about loosing 6% of his body weight, he personally investigated the benefits of controlling his blood glucose by reducing certain carbohydrates and increasing his physical activity, and confirming the impact of these behavior changes with blood glucose monitoring. After 9 months he lowered his A1c from 10.3 to 5.6. He has been able to keep his A1c below 6.0 for the last 12 years on no medication and with the significant support of his wife, Debbie. Following his initial success, he investigated whether this approach would be similarly effective for others. After 10 years of subsequent research and over $10 million of research grants, he can confidently state that Glucose Everyday Matters (GEM) is a powerful and effective tool for those inclined to follow his approach. He now hopes to step outside of the laboratory and share his findings with others also dealing with type 2 diabetes.

Mark Cucuzzella, MD FAAFP MHP

Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel (ret), practices at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia. As a Professor as West Virginia University School of Medicine , Mark developed and adopted an inpatient protocol for using a low-carb diet for patients with obesity, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes. Practicing what they preach, the hospital eliminated all sugar-sweetened beverages from the hospital. Mark was instrumental in bringing MEDCHEFS to the WVU School of Medicine in 2014 with a focus on understanding insulin resistance. An advocate for evidence based policy and education, Mark is a founding member of The Nutrition Coalition, and The Hypoglycemia Foundation and is a scientific advisor for Diet Doctor.

Mark's current research interests are diabetes remission, the use of continuous glucose monitors, and carbohydrate reduction for severe pediatric obesity. He also leads a clinical group "International Multidisciplinary Diabetes Remission Working Group" who just completed a textbook chapter on medication reduction in Type 2 diabetes adapted from the article Adapting Medication for Type 2 Diabetes to a Low Carbohydrate Diet.

Along with his colleague Dr. Cox , Mark also experienced a health challenge and transformation when he was diagnosed with maturity onset diabetes of youth in 2012 and became an early adopter of continuous glucose monitors and dietary modification for disease remission. He lives in Shepherdstown, West Virginia where he also owns a small community running store and directs running races and camps for youth and adults. The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has a reciprocal credit reporting agreement with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
