Program Purpose / Objectives
The purpose of this CME activity is to update practitioners on new antimicrobials and the current recommendations for managing commonly encountered or emerging diseases and potential biowarfare exposure.

Preliminary Objectives for Activity:
At the conclusion of this CME activity, participants shall be able to:
Review rules of travel
Recognize common travel syndromes
Identify value of Malarial prophylaxis
Describe the pathophysiology of influenza
Identify common pathogens encountered in influenza
Summarize pandemic prevention strategies as well as public health and personal guidelines for the prevention of disease transmission
Describe the presentation of pneumonia and SARS
Relate how to manage the patient with pneumonia both as inpatient and outpatient basis
Explain the epidemiology of nosocomial infections
Review the management of common nosocomial infections
Distinguish smallpox from other rashes
Recognize inhalation anthrax
Review the nature of biologic weapons

Faculty
Jerry D. Smilack, M.D. Dr. Smilack is board-certified in internal medicine and in infectious disease. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Mayo College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He is also a consultant to the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, Arizona. Dr. Smilack completed his medical education at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and an Internship at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He completed residencies in internal medicine at Ohio State University Hospital and Brooke General Hospital Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Smilack fulfilled fellowships in infectious disease at Brooke General Hospital, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonia, Texas and at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Smilack is widely published including peer reviewed literature, book chapters and abstracts. He has given numerous invited presentations and lectures.
