Course Overview

UNIVERSITY AT SEA SYNOPSES
CAREGIVER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, INC.
CEU MODULES

Three modules for University at Sea’s Continuing Education program for eligible Long Term Care Professionals offered by Caregiver Management Systems, Inc. Take all three modules to discover “The Road to Solvency” and potentially add $500,000 to your bottom line for every 100 SNF beds in your facility!

Module 1: The Finer Points of Medicare Management – 4CEUs

This module is designed to teach Nursing Home Administrators, Directors of Nursing and Therapy Directors how to utilize patients’ Medicare benefits to their fullest extent and restore patients to their highest levels of functioning. We will cover the precedent setting Fox v Bowen lawsuit, and CMS’s Transmittal 262 which is the Federal Government’s best kept secret. We will examine the positive effects of Transmittal 262 on a facility’s bottom line.

Appropriate utilization of Medicare benefits will, on average, add $250,000 annually to the bottom line for every 100 beds. In addition, we will cover the definition of “skilled care” demonstrating the proper role for Nursing, Therapies, Social Work and Psychiatric Nursing. The role of Pharmacy will also be discussed and how all facets work together to systematically implement Medicare Part A. We will show how this results in significantly more resources for LTC.

Other little known billables to Medicare will be revealed such as:

• Utilization Review Days
• Post Hospital Skilled Nursing Days
• Rehab Low and Restorative Days
• Death and Dying Days
• Reinstatement Days

Learning Objectives:

• What Medicare Should Pay For – Rules and Regulations
• What Medicare is Paying For – Interpretive Guidelines
• Quantify the Difference – Average Length of Stay

I. Medicare Rules & Regulations: What is to be Paid? (60 minutes)
II. Medicare Payment Interpretation (60 minutes)
III. What is the Difference? (30 minutes)
IV. How to Keep the Money (60 minutes)
V. Questions & Answers (30 minutes)

Module 2: The Finer Points of Medicaid Management – 4CEUs

This module is designed to teach Nursing Home Administrators how to implement policies and procedures that will improve their overall Case Mix scores resulting in higher Medicaid rates. CMS performed DAVE audits and found that 95% of the MDS’ were under-coded and not reflecting a valid deficit level for the 18 RUG’s Triggers.
Some of the concepts that we cover that will have a positive impact on Case Mix scores include:

• Proper Approach to Coding the MDS
• Reimbursement Based Care Planning (102 Triggers)
• Case Management Systems for Utilization pertaining to:

1. Restorative Programming
2. Psycho/Social Programming
3. Discharge Planning

Learning Objectives:

• What is Case Mix – Focus on Restorative Model
• How to Implement – Restorative Programming
• How to Measure Performance – Pursuit of Outcomes

I. Scoring Case Mix Principles (60 minutes)
II. Theory – MDS Assessment (75 minutes)
III. Practice – Comprehensive Assessment (75 minutes)
IV. Questions & Answers (30 minutes)

Module 3: The Finer Points of Cost Control Management – 4 CEUs

This module is designed to teach Nursing Home Administrators how to implement Case Management Systems to control quality, labor and ancillary costs. We will explain how to uncover and value those “hidden costs“ that can negatively impact the bottom line and offer system solutions to reverse the trend. We will show you how to measure key statistics that can make a difference to overall management and discuss how to monitor and move them in the direction you want to go.

We will demonstrate a new staffing model together with the latest tracking tools that work for the patient and results in happy employees and improved bottom lines. The system presented establishes a Quality Control mechanism for managing risk,
reimbursement and labor costs.

Examples of improvements through Case Management will include:

• Turnover Rate – Improved Morale
• Absenteeism Rate – Improved Staff Levels
• Fall Rate – Impact on Liability Rates
• Occupancy Rate – Including Image Marketing

Learning Objectives:

• What Costs are Variable, Semi-variable or Fixed
• How to Save on Variable and Semi-variable Costs
• What is the Impact of Waste

I. Expose Hidden Costs (60 minutes)
II. Savings (60 minutes)
III. Business Practice Improvement (60 minutes)
IV. Eliminating Hidden Costs Using Statistics & Graphs (20 minutes)
V. Value Added Incentives for Staff Based on Savings (20 minutes)
VI. Questions & Answers (20 minutes)

Faculty
JERRY L RHOADS, CPA, FACHCA - PRESIDENT/CEO - CAREGIVER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, INC. Jerry’s professional experience in the long term healthcare industry spans over 40 years. His career began as a consultant at Arthur Andersen & Co., where he supervised the implementation of MEDICARE after its enactment in 1966 for Blue Cross and Aetna Insurance Companies. In 1976 he wrote the “White Paper” for HEW that became the foundation of the current Prospective Payment System (PPS) for skilled nursing facilities.

Jerry is CPA and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Administrators. He has presented seminars at many State and National conventions. As a practicing licensed Nursing Home Administrator he has 25 years experience in operations.

His knowledge and understanding of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement are unparalleled and he is considered one of the best reimbursement experts in the country. Based on the Fox v Bowen court case and Transmittal 262, he developed a method to tie the skilled interventions to the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rules, thereby locking in the right amount to be billed based on entitlement, not Fiscal Intermediary interpretations.

While turning around troubled nursing homes in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Jerry also designed a computerized method for mapping clinical workflow for directing and measuring staff effectiveness. By balancing workload with worker capacity, there are significant improvements in labor, efficiency, and productivity. As a result, rampant turnover and absenteeism can be reduced so all resources can be focused on patient outcomes.

His philosophy is that the pursuit of outcome improves patient quality of life and facility income!

Cruise Line cancellation policies are strictly enforced. For that reason, we urge all of our travelers to carefully consider whether travel insurance is a good value for them.

Certainly, if you have reason to think that "something might come up" that might force you to cancel, travel insurance is worth the cost of the premium. Examples we've seen in the past include ill or frail family members and changes in employment causing relocation.

If travel insurance is the right choice for you, we recommend TravelSafe. To visit their site and explore your options click here or on the link above; this link allows you to price out the insurance plan you prefer. The cruise lines also offer travel insurance and we'd be happy to help you go that route if you'd prefer.
