Program Purpose / Objectives
COMPLETE YOUR SAM REQUIREMENTS WHILE CRUISING THE CARIBBEAN!

Based on feedback received from our members, the curriculum has been changed slightly. Three SAMs will be offered during the cruise: Childhood Illness, Health Behavior, and Cerebrovascular Disease.

The Knowledge Assessment portion of the SAMs will be completed on board the ship. You must then complete the Clinical Simulation portion at any time before November 2014.

However, we have added another option for you: At our December 2013 meeting at The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island, the same facilitators will hold one hour workshops to guide you through the Clin Sim portions of the modules you take on the cruise. There will be no additional fees for cruise participants if you choose this option!!

  • Review core-competency questions with experienced family physician faculty and decide the best answer with your colleagues
  • FAFP will report your answers and participation to the ABFM
  • Fulfill the Knowledge Assessment portion of the SAM process
  • Earn up to 24 CME credits when both the Knowledge Assessment and Clinical Simulation portion of each SAM is completed!*
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Assess the core competency questions and answers of the Childhood Illness, Health Behavior, and/or Cerebrovascular Disease Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs)
  • Correctly answer the core competency questions of the SAMs
  • Successfully complete the Knowledge Assessment portion of the SAMs
  • Review basic strategies for navigating the Clinical Simulation portion of the SAMs*

*To fulfill the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Part II requirement, the Clinical Simulation portion of the SAMs must be completed within one year on the ABFM website (separate fee to the ABFM required). As each module is completed, 12 hours of CME credit will be reported to the AAFP by the ABFM on your behalf.

Conference Sessions generally take place on days at sea (as itinerary allows), giving you plenty of time to enjoy your meals, evenings and ports of call with your companion, family and friends.

Ports of Call
Belize City, Belize - From the thriving, pulsating Caribbean capital of Belize, paradise calls. The longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere (175 miles long and second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef) is dotted with cayes teeming with a dazzling array of colorful fish and tropical plants. Inland, find dense virgin jungles, tumbling jade-green rivers and verdant valleys. An eco-tourist's paradise.
Costa Maya, Mexico - Exploring the dense tropical vegetation and wide sandy bays of the Costa Maya, it's easy to imagine the days when sacrifice and slavery, rite and ritual were rampant in the Mayan culture. Even today, the countless ruins of temple walls, stairs and secret pathways exude magic and mystery. And when your archaeology lesson is complete, glorious stretches of coral sand may inspire you to build your own empire-of sand castles, of course!
Cozumel, Mexico - The Conquistadors first saw Mexico from the shores of Cozumel while searching for gold. Today, visitors to the island continue to seek out gold and silver jewelry in the shops of San Miguel while having a great time in its many local bars and restaurants. Plus, the waters around Cozumel's sheltered coral reefs make this one of the best snorkeling areas in the world.
Roatan, Honduras - Roatan Island, Honduras is an adventure traveler's vacation paradise with its blue skies, clear turquoise water and year-round moderate climate. Go scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming with the dolphins or, ashore, take a canopy tour, ride horses, explore tropical scenery, shop for island crafts, walk the beach and view butterfly and floral gardens.
Tampa, Florida - A myriad of attractions awaits you during your stay in the Tampa area: the active nightlife of Tampa's Ybor City, it's Aquarium, and Busch Gardens for those with kids (even Walt Disney World is within striking distance). Magnificent beaches are a short ride away (Ft. DeSoto being a rare jewel of a beach without hotels and "McMansions" crowding out nature), then there's the Dali museum in St. Petersburg's hip, food-and-art-centric Downtown. To the south, in quieter Sarasota, you can visit the palatial mansion and art museum of the king of the circus: John Ringling. It's a great vacation destination, in itself. Be sure to plan a couple days before or after your cruise to soak it in.

Our staff can assist you with all your travel arrangements.

Cruise Line cancellation policies are strictly enforced. For that reason, we urge all of our travelers to carefully consider whether travel insurance is a good value for them.

Certainly, if you have reason to think that "something might come up" that might force you to cancel, travel insurance is worth the cost of the premium. Examples we've seen in the past include ill or frail family members and changes in employment causing relocation.

If travel insurance is the right choice for you, we recommend TravelSafe. To visit their site and explore your options click here or on the link above; this link allows you to price out the insurance plan you prefer. The cruise lines also offer travel insurance and we'd be happy to help you go that route if you'd prefer.
