PROGRAM PURPOSE

Program Purpose and Objectives

Today's healthcare practitioners need more than just clinical expertise; they must also understand education, research, and leadership. This set of three non-clinical modules is designed to provide basics and practical knowledge that can be applied in your healthcare delivery setting. Within each set, we will work to cover specific issues of interest to you and individual and team activities to apply and reinforce new knowledge and skills.

The course will provide an overview of important pathologies seen commonly in the PICU. It will empower the learners to gain skills that will allow them to recognize critical illness early in children and to intervene in clinical scenarios commonly encountered. The learner will be able to recognize sepsis early and intervene appropriately.

  1. Education Basics for Teaching Patients, Families/Caregivers, and Staff
  2. Connecting Research to Practice
  3. Skills for Team Based Healthcare Delivery
There are three unifying themes to the set of interactive clinical lectures.
  1. Clinicians will learn evidence-based details regarding management of common impactful issues in primary care such as type II diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and contraception.
  2. Clinicians will learn general patient-oriented schemes to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various patient care options.
  3. Clinicians will learn and use tools which they can keep using back home which provide quick-reference decision support during patient care.
Topics and Objectives
  1. Education Basics: Goals and Objectives
    • Differentiate between learning goals and objectives and construct a learning objective relevant to their own clinical setting.
  2. Education Basics: Connecting the learner and the content.
    • Review and apply the basic traits of adult learners to the content we want them to master.
  3. Education Basics: Designing Instruction.
    • Differentiate between the ADDIE and ASSURE models, and select the best approach depending on your goals.
  4. Connecting Research to Practice: What is research; and what are the building blocks?
    • Define research and identity three basic strategies.
  5. Connecting Research to Practice: Finding useful research outcomes.
    • Identify processes to find useful and relevant research outcomes.
  6. Creating and Managing Teams: What's the Difference Between a Staff and a Team?
    • Differentiate between a staff and a team and discuss strategies to transition from staff to team.
  7. Creating and Managing Teams: How do Teams Become Self-supporting?
    • Define and explore the roles of climate and culture in the clinical setting and they foster team-based care.
    1. Congenital Cardiac Malformations and Repair
      • Discuss the anatomy and repair of common congenital heart lesions
    2. Pathophysiology and Treatment of Sepsis
      • List the current treatment goals for sepsis to be delivered in the early hours of therapy.
    3. Vaccine-preventable Illnesses and their ICU Manifestations
      • Describe the clinical manifestations of several vaccine-preventable illnesses.
    4. Severe Asthma Management: From Home to the PICU
      • List the most important treatments for severe asthma.
    5. Death by Neurological Criteria: Diagnosis and Management
      • Describe the criteria for the clinical diagnosis of brain death
    6. Ethical Issues in the PICU
      • Discuss relevant ethical issues commonly encountered in the PICU
    7. Endocrine Emergencies in the ICU: Case Studies in DKA, Thyroid Storm and Adrenal Insufficiency.
      • Discuss the appropriate management of endocrine emergencies in the PICU.

PORTS OF CALL

Vancouver, British Columbia - Sophisticated. Culturally diverse, this beautiful port city brims with attractions. From Vancouver's cosmopolitan downtown to the historically renovated Gastown district and exotic Chinatown, Vancouver displays varied urban scenes. Nestled near the city center is Stanley Park, resplendent with its deep forest, totem poles, and scenic promenades.

Non-US/Canadian individuals, please Click here to determine if you will need a visa to board this cruise which visits Canada.

At Sea - Cruising - Cruising

Juneau, Alaska - You can’t get to Juneau easily without a sprint by air or by sea. But once you arrive you’ll find majestic views and rich culture in every corner. With its snowcapped mountains, misty rainforests, massive glaciers and bounty of wildlife, Alaska’s remote state capital is the perfect place to dive into nature. Framed by Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, the city’s picturesque downtown area offers centuries-old bars, boutique shops and historic landmarks. For a taste of the local culture, visit the historic district and the Alaska State Museum. And for outdoor thrills, you can take your pick of activities ranging from whale watching in Auke Bay Harbor to tundra trekking over Mendenhall Glacier, and even try your hand at gold panning in Last Chance Basin.

Skagway, Alaska - The tiny town of Skagway still looks like it did during the Klondike Gold Rush over 100 years ago— and today it remains an outpost for thrilling Alaskan adventure. An old-time street car ride along bustling Broadway Street reveals well-preserved buildings, including the state’s oldest hotel. You can see engraved walrus tusks at the Corrington Museum, or get lost in riveting historical reenactments around town. If outdoor adventure is more your thing, there are plenty of ways to amp up the adrenaline, from sledding with Alaskan Huskies on Laughton Glacier to rafting Lynn Canal, the longest fjord in North America.

Ketchikan, Alaska - Ketchikan sits at the southern end of Alaska’s Inside Passage— a gateway to the wild landscapes and seascapes of Misty Fjords National Monument. The canned salmon capital of the world, it’s a hub for fishing and outdoor sports. It’s also home to three tribes of Northwest Coast Indians, making it a great place to get a taste for the local culture. You’ll see it in the colorful, hand-carved totems that line the city’s streets and parks, and in the unique stilted homes that cling to Deer Mountain’s slopes. If you want to get up close and personal with nature, venture into the Tongass National Forest, the largest in the United States. Or head to Ketchikan Creek Waterfall for amazing views of downtown Ketchikan and a glimpse at the yearly salmon runs.
