PORTS OF CALL

Day 1: Budapest, Hungary

Your Danube journey begins in a city that is a destination in its own right. Budapest is not merely a starting point; it's a grand, complex capital that richly rewards those who arrive a day or two early. Doing so allows you to acclimate to the time zone, provides a valuable buffer against potential travel delays, and offers a chance to properly immerse yourself in the 'Pearl of the Danube' before your cruise begins.

Upon arrival at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), you have several straightforward options for reaching the city center. The most direct is the 100E express bus, which runs directly to Deák Ferenc Square in the heart of Pest. Official Főtaxi taxis are readily available outside the terminal, or you can pre-book a transfer for peace of mind. Once settled, the city's efficient metro, tram, and bus network—supplemented by extensive walkable areas—makes exploration easy.

We recommend structuring your pre-cruise stay by dedicating one day to each side of the river.

**Day 1: Historic Buda & Thermal Baths**

Spend your first full day exploring the hills of Buda, the city's historic heart. Ascend Castle Hill to discover a trio of essential sights. Wander the grounds of Buda Castle, home to the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. A short walk leads to the neo-Gothic Matthias Church, famed for its vibrantly tiled roof. Adjacent is the Fisherman's Bastion, a fairytale-like structure of turrets and terraces offering what is arguably the most iconic panoramic view of the Danube, the Chain Bridge, and the magnificent Parliament Building across the river.

In the afternoon, experience a cornerstone of Budapest life: the thermal baths. For old-world grandeur, the Art Nouveau Gellért Baths are a classic choice. For a more traditional and atmospheric experience, the Rudas Baths feature a 16th-century octagonal pool from the Ottoman era. Soaking in the mineral-rich waters is the perfect way to unwind after a day of walking and reset after your flight.

**Day 2: Cosmopolitan Pest & Cultural Immersion**

Devote your second day to the vibrant, flat streets of Pest. Begin at the Hungarian Parliament Building, a breathtaking architectural masterpiece. It is essential to book tour tickets online well in advance, as they frequently sell out. Afterwards, take a solemn moment at the 'Shoes on the Danube Bank' memorial, a poignant tribute to the victims of the Holocaust.

From there, stroll towards St. Stephen's Basilica, where you can climb the dome for a 360-degree view of the city. Continue down the elegant Andrássy Avenue, Budapest's version of the Champs-Élysées, lined with high-end shops and impressive architecture. This path leads to Heroes' Square, a monumental plaza featuring statues of key figures from Hungarian history.

For your final evening, delve into the energetic Jewish Quarter (District VII). Here you'll find the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe. This neighborhood is also the epicenter of Budapest's famous 'ruin bars'—eclectic pubs set up in derelict pre-war buildings. A visit to the original, Szimpla Kert, is a memorable experience. For dinner, the area offers everything from traditional Hungarian restaurants serving hearty goulash to modern eateries and the popular Karaván street food court, where you can sample local favorites like lángos (deep-fried dough with toppings).

Before heading to your ship, consider a visit to the Great Market Hall. This vast, three-story market is a feast for the senses, perfect for tasting local produce, picking up paprika and other souvenirs, or enjoying a final Hungarian meal. Arriving early for your cruise doesn't just add time; it adds an entirely new dimension to your European vacation.

Day 2: Budapest and Mohács

It's important to understand the structure of this day: your morning will likely be spent enjoying a final, scenic cruise past the grandeur of Budapest's riverfront before continuing south to the small port town of Mohács. Think of Mohács not as the destination itself, but as a gateway to the rich culture of Southern Hungary. From here, you face a genuinely appealing choice.

The primary draw is the excursion to Pécs, a beautiful university city with a history stretching back to Roman times. Its true highlight is the UNESCO World Heritage early Christian Necropolis, a remarkable collection of underground burial chambers. The city center is a fascinating blend of influences, best seen in the main square where a former Ottoman mosque now serves as a Catholic church. This is an excellent choice for those who love history and architecture.

Alternatively, you can delve into one of Hungary's most historic wine regions, Szekszárd. This is a wonderful opportunity for a more relaxed, sensory experience, tasting the robust red wines the area is famous for. For those seeking a more active day, a guided bike ride along the Danube offers a peaceful way to experience the Hungarian countryside without a long bus ride. Mohács itself is quiet, but it's the quality of these excursions that makes this a rewarding day.

Day 3: Vukovar

Vukovar is not a typical tourist port; it is a destination of profound historical weight and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. A visit here is a moving and educational experience, centered on the city’s story of destruction and rebirth during the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s. The most poignant symbol of this struggle is the Vukovar Water Tower, left scarred with shell impacts as a permanent memorial. While the city’s recent history is palpable, its cultural heritage endures in the beautifully restored Eltz Manor, a Baroque palace now housing the city museum.

For a fascinating look into a much deeper past, the Vučedol Culture Museum is an absolute must-see. This world-class institution, built on a major archaeological site, offers a stunning exhibition on a sophisticated prehistoric culture that thrived here 5,000 years ago. Alternatively, you can explore the nearby city of Osijek, with its charming Austro-Hungarian old town, or experience the region’s agricultural heart with a tasting of local wines like Graševina. Vukovar offers a thoughtful, memorable day for those interested in modern history and ancient civilizations.

Day 4: Belgrade

Belgrade is not a city of delicate pastels; it’s a capital of grit, resilience, and palpable energy, shaped by centuries of turbulent history at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. For the curious traveler, it offers a deeply rewarding day of discovery.

Your essential starting point is the magnificent Kalemegdan Fortress. More than just a military structure, it’s a sprawling park and the city’s historic heart, offering commanding views of the two rivers meeting below. Strolling its ramparts, you’re walking through layers of Roman, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian history. From there, a walk down the lively Knez Mihailova Street, a pedestrian boulevard lined with shops and cafes, gives you a real sense of the city’s modern pulse.

A short distance away stands the monumental Temple of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. While the exterior is impressive, the recently completed interior mosaics are breathtakingly beautiful and an absolute must-see. For a different kind of inspiration, the Nikola Tesla Museum is a compact but fascinating tribute to the visionary inventor, offering a glimpse into a brilliant mind that changed the world.

To truly capture the city’s spirit, find a moment in the bohemian quarter of Skadarlija, with its cobblestone streets and traditional restaurants (kafanas). Here, you can sample a taste of Šljivovitz (plum brandy), a cherished part of Serbian culture. Belgrade reveals its character not in grand, polished monuments, but in its vibrant street life, its layered history, and the warm spirit of its people.

Day 5: Iron Gates

Today is not about a port city, but about the journey itself—a passage through one of Europe's most dramatic natural wonders. The Iron Gates is a spectacular series of gorges where the Danube River carves a path between the Carpathian and Balkan mountains, forming the natural border between Serbia and Romania.

Your day is best spent on deck, watching the scenery unfold. The experience often begins with the sight of the magnificent Golubac Fortress, a medieval sentinel guarding the entrance to the gorge. As you cruise deeper, the river narrows and the cliffs rise dramatically around you. Keep your camera ready for two remarkable sights carved into the rock: the Tabula Traiana, a Roman plaque commemorating an ancient road, and the colossal, modern sculpture of the Dacian king, Decebalus, staring defiantly across the water. This is a day for quiet appreciation of a raw, historical landscape from the comfort of your ship.

Day 6: Vidin

Vidin offers a quiet, authentic glimpse into Bulgaria's history along the Danube. This is not a bustling metropolis, but a genuine provincial town whose charm lies in its unpretentious atmosphere. The undeniable highlight is the Baba Vida Fortress, the best-preserved medieval castle in the country. Standing guard over the river, its stone walls and towers are wonderfully explorable and offer commanding views. A walk or bike ride through the town reveals other historical layers, including the ruins of a once-grand synagogue and an Ottoman-era mosque, telling the story of a complex past.

For a truly memorable experience, consider an excursion that connects you with local culture. The opportunity to visit a local home to learn how to make *banitsa* (a savory cheese pastry) and taste traditional Bulgarian yogurt is a genuine treat. It’s a simple, warm, and delicious way to understand the heart of the region. Vidin is a modest port, best appreciated for what it is: a peaceful stop that provides a sincere taste of Bulgarian life and history, far from the usual tourist crowds.

Day 7: Rousse

Rousse, often called Bulgaria's "Little Vienna," is a handsome Danube port whose primary strength is its role as a gateway to some of the region's most compelling sites. Your day here is less about exploring the immediate port and more about choosing your own adventure from three distinct, high-quality excursions.

For the dedicated history enthusiast, the full-day trip to Veliko Tarnovo is an essential journey into the heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire. You'll explore the dramatic, hilltop Tsarevets Fortress, the former seat of medieval tsars, and wander the cobblestone streets of a city that feels steeped in history.

Alternatively, you can opt for a more local, art-focused day. This tour combines a look at Rousse's own elegant 19th-century architecture with a visit to the truly unique Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo. This UNESCO World Heritage site features a complex of churches and chapels carved directly into the cliffs, housing some of the most vivid and well-preserved 14th-century frescoes in Europe.

For those with grand ambitions, a full-day excursion to Bucharest, Romania, is also possible. While it involves a significant amount of travel, the payoff is a panoramic introduction to the "Paris of the East," with its wide boulevards, Belle Époque buildings, and monumental architecture. Your decision here comes down to personal interest: deep Bulgarian history, unique medieval art, or a whirlwind tour of a neighboring capital.

Day 8: Giurgiu, Romania

Your river journey concludes in the port of Giurgiu, but your exploration of Romania is just beginning. While Giurgiu itself is a quiet port town, it serves as the gateway to one of Eastern Europe’s most dynamic and complex capitals: Bucharest. A comfortable one-hour drive north transports you from the Danube to a city of grand boulevards, hidden Orthodox churches, and stark reminders of a tumultuous 20th century. Rushing to the airport means missing an essential part of the Romanian story. A two or three-day stay is the perfect way to absorb the city's compelling character.

### Why Extend Your Stay in Bucharest?

Bucharest is a city of fascinating contrasts. Nicknamed the “Paris of the East” in the early 20th century for its elegant Belle Époque architecture, its landscape is now a mosaic of that grandeur, imposing Communist-era structures, and vibrant modern energy. It’s a place that rewards curiosity, with leafy parks, world-class museums, and a beautifully restored Old Town buzzing with life.

### A Suggested Post-Cruise Itinerary

**Day 1: Grandeur, Revolution, and the Old Town**

After your transfer from Giurgiu and checking into your hotel, begin your exploration with the city’s most unmissable landmark: the Palace of the Parliament. A monolithic structure born from the megalomania of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, it is the second-largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon. The sheer scale is staggering, and a guided tour reveals opulent interiors of marble and crystal that stand in stark contrast to the austerity the Romanian people endured. We advise booking tickets online in advance to secure your preferred tour time and language.

From there, take a walk down Calea Victoriei, the city’s most historic and fashionable avenue. Here you’ll pass landmarks like the magnificent Romanian Athenaeum concert hall, the National Museum of Art (housed in the former Royal Palace), and Revolution Square, where the 1989 revolution reached its climax. As evening falls, immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the Lipscani district, Bucharest’s Old Town. Its cobblestone streets are lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars. For an authentic dinner, find a table at a traditional restaurant like the famed Caru' cu Bere to sample Romanian staples like *sarmale* (cabbage rolls) or *mici* (grilled minced meat rolls).

**Day 2: Village Life and Local Haunts**

Dedicate your second morning to one of Bucharest’s exceptional museums. The National Village Museum (Muzeul Satului) is a superb open-air museum in Herăstrău Park, featuring authentic, historic peasant homes, churches, and windmills relocated from across Romania. It’s a captivating walk through the country’s rural heritage. For a different perspective on history, consider a tour of the Ceaușescu Mansion (Primăvara Palace), the surprisingly lavish private home of the former dictator and his wife, preserved as it was when they fled.

In the afternoon, discover a modern Bucharest icon: Cărturești Carusel. This stunningly beautiful bookstore in a restored 19th-century building is a destination in itself, with six floors of books, art, and a top-floor bistro. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxing stroll or paddleboat ride in Cișmigiu Gardens, the city's oldest and most charming public park. For dinner, explore the city’s burgeoning modern culinary scene or find a cozy wine bar to sample excellent Romanian varietals like Fetească Neagră.

**Day 3 (Optional): Castles or Relaxation**

If you have a third day, consider a day trip into the Carpathian Mountains. The most popular tour combines a visit to Peleș Castle, a breathtaking Neo-Renaissance masterpiece and former royal summer residence, with Bran Castle, famously (and loosely) associated with the Dracula legend. While Bran is a Gothic fortress steeped in myth, Peleș is the true architectural gem.

For a more relaxing end to your vacation, consider a day at Therme București. Located conveniently near the airport, this massive and modern wellness complex features thermal pools, saunas, and botanical gardens—a perfect way to unwind before your flight home.

### Practical Information

* **Getting Around:** Bucharest is easy to navigate. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt are widely available and inexpensive. The metro system is also efficient for covering longer distances.
* **Departure:** Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) is a 30-45 minute taxi or ride-share journey from the city center, traffic permitting. An express train also connects the main train station (Gara de Nord) to the airport.
