CME Cruise Conferences arriving in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

As your ship docks and your cruise concludes, the temptation is to make a swift exit toward the airport. We’d like to suggest a different approach: Don’t let the end of your voyage be the end of your vacation. Fort Lauderdale is far more than a convenient port; it’s a destination in its own right, offering the perfect environment to decompress and savor a few more days of discovery before returning to your routine. Think of a post-cruise stay here not as an obligation, but as a seamless transition from the structured rhythm of life at sea to the freedom of exploring on your own terms. Here’s how you can thoughtfully extend your trip for one to three days. Day 1: The “Venice of America” & Urban Sophistication After disembarking, bypass the airport shuttles and take a short ride to your hotel. Whether you choose a chic boutique hotel along the beach or a well-appointed property downtown, drop your bags and begin your exploration on Las Olas Boulevard. This is the city’s heart, a beautifully landscaped thoroughfare lined with independent art galleries, unique shops, and inviting sidewalk cafes perfect for people-watching. It’s an ideal place to reacclimate to life on land. For lunch, find a spot like Louie Bossi’s for its vibrant atmosphere and authentic Italian fare, or El Camino for creative tacos and craft cocktails. In the afternoon, truly understand why the city earned its nickname, the “Venice of America.” Hop on the Water Taxi. This is not merely transportation; it’s a narrated sightseeing tour that glides along the Intracoastal Waterway and New River. You’ll cruise past stunning waterfront mansions, admire magnificent yachts, and gain a unique perspective on the city’s layout. You can hop on and off at various stops, including restaurants and shops, making it a relaxing and practical way to explore. For dinner, use the Water Taxi to arrive at a waterfront restaurant like 15th Street Fisheries, a local institution where you can enjoy fresh seafood while watching boats drift by. Day 2: Coastal Beauty & A Glimpse of Old Florida Dedicate your second day to the natural beauty that defines the region. Start with Fort Lauderdale Beach itself. This is not the frenetic party scene of its southern neighbor; instead, you’ll find a wide, clean stretch of sand bordered by a beautifully designed, wave-walled promenade. It’s perfect for a long walk, renting a lounge chair to read a book, or simply enjoying the Atlantic breeze. For a dose of accessible culture, visit the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. This historic estate, nestled between the beach and the Intracoastal, is a true gem. The whimsical home of artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett, it’s preserved just as they left it, offering a fascinating look into early 20th-century artistic life in South Florida. The surrounding grounds are a lush oasis of native and tropical vegetation, complete with swans and the occasional wild monkey. Alternatively, for a more profound natural encounter, venture west to the Everglades. Just a 30-40 minute drive from the city, this vast wetland wilderness is a world away. An airboat tour through the “River of Grass” is an essential Florida experience, offering the thrill of skimming across the water and the high probability of spotting alligators, turtles, and wading birds in their natural habitat. It’s a powerful reminder of the wildness that still exists just beyond the city’s edge. Day 3: Leisurely Departure If you have a late afternoon flight, your last morning can be spent at a relaxed pace. Consider a visit to Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, a tranquil preserve often called Fort Lauderdale’s “Central Park,” offering walking trails and a peaceful lagoon. Or, for art lovers, the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale downtown features an impressive collection, including the country’s largest collection of works by American realist William Glackens. Practicalities & Departure When it’s finally time to leave, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is exceptionally convenient, located just a few miles from the cruise port and downtown (a 10-15 minute ride). Miami International Airport (MIA) is also an option, though it requires a longer 45-60 minute drive. Taxis and rideshare services are readily available from any hotel. By giving yourself these extra days, you transform a simple disembarkation port into a memorable final chapter of your journey.
