CME Cruises Departing from Reykjavik, Iceland
Your Icelandic journey begins in Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital and a city that hums with a unique blend of creative energy and profound natural connection. While it serves as your point of embarkation, to treat it as a mere starting line would be to miss the very soul of modern Iceland. We strongly encourage you to arrive one or two days early, allowing you to acclimate, unwind, and immerse yourself in a culture that is as warm and dynamic as the geothermal springs bubbling beneath its surface.
Iceland's capital and largest city is located on the country's southwest coast at the head of Faxafloi Bay. Settled in 877 AD, Reykjavik has grown into an important seaport and center of government and education with theatres, museums and observatories. Interestingly, this modern city still chooses to use water from nearby hot springs to heat all of its buildings, a testament to its innovative and sustainable spirit. Arriving early provides a crucial buffer against potential travel delays and allows you to begin your well-deserved vacation in a state of relaxed discovery, not a frantic rush to the pier.
**A Suggested Pre-Cruise Itinerary:**
**Day 1: Arrival, Acclimation, and Architectural Wonders**
Upon landing at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), your introduction to Iceland's otherworldly landscape begins. The 45-minute drive to Reykjavik takes you through vast, moss-covered lava fields that feel like another planet. Convenient and comfortable airport shuttles or pre-booked transfers will deliver you directly to your city hotel.
After settling in, take to the streets of this remarkably walkable city. Your first landmark should be the magnificent **Hallgrímskirkja**, the expressionist church whose design was inspired by the basalt columns formed by cooling lava. Take the elevator to the top for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the city's colorful rooftops, the surrounding bay, and the distant mountains—an excellent way to get your bearings.
From there, meander down towards the waterfront to see the striking **Sun Voyager (Sólfar)** sculpture, a gleaming steel ode to discovery that beautifully captures the city's Viking spirit. Continue your walk along the harbor to the **Harpa Concert Hall**, an architectural masterpiece of geometric glass panels that shimmer with the changing light. For dinner, explore Reykjavik's celebrated culinary scene. Move beyond the clichés and discover New Nordic cuisine, where chefs create magic with locally sourced lamb, arctic char, and skyr. From Michelin-recognized establishments to cozy, neighborhood bistros, the quality is exceptional.
**Day 2: Geothermal Wellness and Natural Grandeur**
Today is for experiencing the elemental forces that define Iceland. You have two superb options, each offering a different kind of rejuvenation.
* **Option A: The Blue Lagoon.** Indulge in the ultimate pre-cruise relaxation. This world-famous geothermal spa is an iconic Icelandic experience. Immerse yourself in the mineral-rich, milky-blue waters, apply a silica mud mask, and feel the stress of your daily life melt away. It is the perfect prescription for a hardworking professional seeking tranquility before the intellectual engagement of your onboard conference.
* **Option B: The Golden Circle.** For a day of profound discovery, embark on a tour of the Golden Circle, Iceland's most famous sightseeing route. This accessible loop from Reykjavik introduces you to three staggering natural wonders. First, **Þingvellir National Park**, a site of immense historical and geological importance where you can walk in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Next, witness the raw power of the **Gullfoss** waterfall, the “Golden Falls,” as it thunders into a deep canyon. Finally, experience the geothermal fields of **Haukadalur**, where the geyser **Strokkur** erupts with spectacular force every few minutes.
In the evening, enjoy a final Icelandic dinner or explore the main shopping street, **Laugavegur**, for unique souvenirs like a classic hand-knitted wool sweater (lopapeysa) or minimalist Icelandic design pieces.
By the time you board your ship, you won't just be starting a cruise; you'll be continuing an adventure that has already begun. You'll be rested, inspired, and carrying with you the unforgettable landscapes and creative spirit of Reykjavik.
