Gregory E. Holt, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Miami, and a staff physician at the Miami VA Medical Center. He earned his MD and PhD in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Loyola University Chicago, completed his internal medicine residency at Georgetown University, and finished his Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at the University of Washington.
Dr. Holt’s clinical and research work spans the lung cancer continuum, from screening and advanced bronchoscopic diagnosis to precision oncology. He serves as the Director of the Lung Cancer Screening Program at the Miami VA Medical Center and the Principal Investigator for the VA Lung Precision Oncology Program for VISN8. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, secured more than $7.3 million in research funding, and been involved in over 35 clinical trials.
A dedicated educator and advocate, Dr. Holt is the founder of LungCancerKiltsResearchCures.org and is well-known for his memorable approach to medical advocacy, often wearing a kilt to raise awareness for lung cancer research. His interests extend to medical ethics; notably, he is the lead author of the widely discussed New England Journal of Medicine article, “An Unconscious Patient with a DNR Tattoo.”
In a unique extension of his pulmonary expertise, Dr. Holt also provides pulmonary consultations for non-human primates at Zoo Miami, having performed bronchoscopies on lowland gorillas and chimpanzees. He is a highly regarded speaker known for blending scientific depth with humor and bedside practicality.
