Dr. Jitender Sareen is Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry within the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, and serves as the Provincial Specialty Lead for Mental Health and Addictions at Shared Health. He also holds academic cross-appointments in the Department of Psychology and the College of Community and Global Health, and leads the Manitoba Population Mental Health Research Group. Dr. Sareen earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Winnipeg, followed by his medical degree and psychiatry residency training from the University of Manitoba, where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC). He subsequently completed an advanced research fellowship at the University of California, San Diego.
An internationally recognized authority in psychiatric epidemiology and population mental health, Dr. Sareen focuses his clinical and research work on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicide risk assessment and prevention, Indigenous mental health, and military and veteran mental health. His work has secured more than $20 million in grant funding as a principal investigator and has directly informed provincial and federal policies addressing trauma, homelessness, and veteran well-being. Expanding the reach of mental health services, his research also explores digital therapeutics and mobile applications designed to increase care accessibility for vulnerable populations. In the public policy arena, Dr. Sareen has provided expert testimony before both the House of Commons and Senate Standing Committees on Veterans and Public Safety Personnel.
A prolific author and investigator, Dr. Sareen has published more than 450 peer-reviewed articles in leading medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Psychiatry, CMAJ, Psychological Medicine, and the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry. In recognition of his transformative contributions to psychiatric research and community advocacy, he has been honored with the Canadian Psychiatric Association’s J.M. Cleghorn Award for Excellence in Research, the University of Winnipeg Distinguished Alumni Award, and selection as a Canadian Institutes of Military and Veterans Health Research Fellow.
