Dr. Tolentino is scientific advisor and consultant for several pharmaceutical companies. At the University of Pennsylvania, he was principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health-funded lab, directed the retina service at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital, and served as surgical teacher for ophthalmology residents and the director of the retinal surgical fellowship. He lectures internationally on new therapies for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and has delivered over 100 invited lectures in over 15 countries.

Recognized Expert in New Therapies for Retinal and Macular Diseases

Dr. Tolentino helped develop all current treatments for wet macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, including Avastin, Lucentis, Macugen and Verteporfin. He was first in the world to test Avastin in a model of eye disease 15 years ago. He has more than 80 peer reviewed publications and 5 issued patents. As a clinical investigator he has been principal investigator on over 70 clinical research studies evaluating new drug treatments for wet and dry macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. At the CRMD he is helping to develop eyedrops for wet macular degeneration, novel treatments for dry macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. Tolentino serves as the High Skill High Wage board member of the Lakeland Economic development council and a member of the Lakeland Council of Enterpeneurial Development Dr. Tolentino resides in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and three children.

Diana L. Shechtman O.D., FAAO, is an associate professor of optometry at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, where she serves as an attending optometric physician at the eye institute and diabetic/macula clinic.

Dr. Shechtman is a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), Ocular Nutrition Society (ONS) and she is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), as well as the Optometric Retinal Society (ORS). Her area of interest has centered on retinal disease and other ocular pathologies. She has participated in various research projects, authored numerous posters and publications. She is a member of the editorial board for the Optometry journal, Optometry times, and Review of Optometry, where she co-author the monthly “Research Review” column. She has also lecture on a local and national level on areas in retinal disease.
