PORTS OF CALL

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver is one of the few world cities where a major metropolis feels seamlessly integrated with the wilderness. The cruise terminal at Canada Place puts you directly in the heart of this stunning landscape, with soaring mountains and the Pacific Ocean framing a vibrant, walkable downtown. This prime location means many of the city's best experiences are immediately accessible, allowing for a rich and varied day ashore.

A short walk or bike ride along the waterfront leads to Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre temperate rainforest that is the city's soul. Its famous seawall offers breathtaking views of the harbor and North Shore mountains, while inland trails lead through towering cedars and firs. Don't miss the collection of First Nations totem poles at Brockton Point, a powerful and accessible cultural landmark.

For a dose of history and modern style, explore Gastown, the city's oldest neighborhood. Its Victorian architecture, cobblestone streets, and iconic steam clock now house independent boutiques, Indigenous art galleries, and some of Vancouver's most innovative restaurants and cocktail bars.

A quick, scenic ride on a False Creek Ferry or Aquabus takes you to Granville Island. While popular, its Public Market is an authentic sensory delight, bustling with local artisans, bakers, and fishmongers. It’s the perfect place to sample local smoked salmon, grab a coffee, and watch the city's maritime life unfold. For those with an interest in art, the Vancouver Art Gallery, housed in a former courthouse, features a significant collection of works by British Columbian artists, including the renowned Emily Carr.

Vancouver's culinary scene is a destination in itself, celebrated for its exceptional Pacific Northwest seafood and diverse Asian influences, from world-class sushi to authentic dim sum in historic Chinatown. It’s a city that rewards exploration on foot, offering a sophisticated yet refreshingly unpretentious urban experience.

Alaska Inside Passage

The Inside Passage isn't a port of call; for many, it is the entire point of an Alaskan cruise. This is not a day for shore excursions but a full immersion into one of the planet's most magnificent natural corridors. As your ship navigates these protected waters, you're traveling through a world carved by glaciers, where thousand-foot waterfalls cascade down sheer granite cliffs and the vast Tongass National Forest blankets every island.

The primary activity here is observation, and it is absolutely captivating. Find a spot on deck or on your balcony—with good binoculars in hand—and prepare to be humbled. The silence of the fjords is often broken only by the cry of a bald eagle or the thunderous crack of a tidewater glacier calving into the sea. This is where you'll witness the famous 'glacial blue,' an ethereal color that glows from within massive ice fields like those in Glacier Bay or Tracy Arm Fjord.

Keep a constant watch on the water. The passage is a rich feeding ground for humpback whales, and seeing one breach is an unforgettable, heart-stopping moment. Pods of orcas are also a common sight, as are sea lions barking from rocky haul-outs. Look toward the shore, and you might even spot a brown bear foraging along the water's edge at low tide.

Our best advice is simple: dress in warm layers, get outside, and listen to the onboard naturalist's commentary, which adds invaluable context to the spectacle. This is a profound, meditative experience—a chance to disconnect and witness the raw, untamed power of nature in a way that few places on Earth can offer.

Icy Strait Point, Alaska

Icy Strait Point offers a distinctly Alaskan experience, different from any other port. It is not a historic town but a private destination owned and operated by the Huna Totem Corporation, ensuring that your visit directly supports the local Tlingit community. The port is centered around a meticulously restored 1912 salmon cannery, which now serves as a vibrant hub with museums, local artisan shops, and restaurants. The entire experience is thoughtfully designed to blend with the stunning natural landscape of Chichagof Island.

The primary draw here is the incredible access to wildlife. The nutrient-rich waters of Port Frederick are a summer feeding ground for humpback whales, making whale-watching tours exceptionally rewarding. For those hoping to see terrestrial giants, guided excursions search for the island's dense population of coastal brown bears in their natural habitat.

For a dose of adrenaline, the ZipRider is one of the longest in the world, offering a breathtaking flight over the rainforest canopy with spectacular views of the port. Beyond the thrills, the port provides genuine cultural immersion. You can witness traditional Tlingit storytelling and dance performances, observe master carvers at work on totem poles, and learn about the deep connection between the people and this land. The port is easily navigable, with two dock areas connected by scenic gondolas. While the nearby village of Hoonah is accessible, most visitors find the port's self-contained offerings provide a full and satisfying day.

Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is a quintessential Alaskan port, a capital city uniquely isolated by wilderness and accessible only by air or sea. This isolation is its charm, creating a place where dramatic nature is always the main event. The undisputed star is the Mendenhall Glacier, a magnificent river of ice just a short drive from the docks. The visitor center provides spectacular views, but for a truly memorable experience, we recommend a helicopter tour that lands you directly on the glacier itself—an investment, but one that pays dividends in awe.

Beyond the glacier, Juneau is one of Alaska’s premier whale-watching destinations. The nutrient-rich waters of the Inside Passage are a summer feeding ground for humpback whales, and sightings are exceptionally common. For a different perspective, the Mount Roberts Tramway, which departs right from the cruise ship dock, whisks you 1,800 feet up for panoramic views of the Gastineau Channel and the surrounding Tongass National Forest.

The downtown area is compact, historic, and easily explored on foot. While it can be bustling with fellow cruisers, it’s worth a stroll down South Franklin Street to see the preserved architecture. For a dose of culture, the Alaska State Museum offers a superb collection of Native Alaskan and pioneer history. While the famous Red Dog Saloon is a lively and historic stop, for a more authentic taste of Juneau, seek out a local salmon bake. Juneau delivers exactly what you hope for in Alaska: breathtaking scenery and wildlife encounters that feel both grand and accessible.

Haines

Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Tracy Arm is not a port for disembarking but an immersive scenic experience, best spent on deck regardless of the weather. The day is dedicated to navigating the narrow, 30-mile-long fjord, where the sheer scale of the landscape is humbling. Granite walls rise thousands of feet directly from the water, streaked with countless waterfalls that cascade down the rock faces. The waterway is often dotted with floating ice, from small "growlers" to larger, brilliantly blue icebergs that serve as resting spots for harbor seals. The journey culminates at the twin Sawyer Glaciers, massive rivers of ancient, compressed ice. If conditions permit, the ship will linger, offering a chance to witness the dramatic spectacle of calving, where immense chunks of ice break away and crash into the sea. This is a purely observational day. We advise finding a good vantage point early, dressing in warm, waterproof layers, and keeping binoculars and a camera at the ready. The raw, powerful beauty of the fjord is the main event.
