The purpose of this CME activity is to review the acute management of traumatic injuries, poisonings and other emergency conditions for ER practitioners.

Faculty
Harry W. Severance, M.D.
Dr. Harry W. Severance has been teaching, entertaining and enthralling audiences of all types and ages with his special ability to deliver medically-related materials in a manner to a wide variety of audiences from Medical Professionals to the General Public. Dr. Severance's areas of specialization place him squarely in some of todays most controversial and talked about topics. His ability to discuss and present various aspects of such topics has led to his presenting to a large cross-section of audiences in many differing locations and environments; including Radio and Television presentations, as well as a host of conferences and seminars regionally, nationally as well as in international locations, cruise conferences, etc.

Dr. Severance has or currently serves as an advisor to, or on Boards of Directors, or Steering Committees of many Regional and National organizations such as The FBI, Department of Justice, American College of Emergency Physicians to name a few, in his areas of expertise. Dr. Severance is an Associate Professor and Assistant Research Director, Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, University of South Florida, Tampa Florida. Dr. Severance also holds a collaborative research position as an Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, at Duke University Medical Center and School of Medicine. Dr. Severance is the author or co-author of more than 50 articles and Textbook Chapters on a variety of topics on which he teaches and does research. Dr. Severance is a practicing Attending Emergency & Trauma Physician for the Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program, USF/Tampa General Hospital.

Some of his areas of teaching and research specialization include; Emergency Interventions for Acute Coronary Disease, Management of penetrating injuries such as Gunshot wounds and the problems; both medical and social which these injuries produce, Mass Casualty Management and the effects of events such as September 11" and the Oklahoma Disaster on victims, families and Society in general and ways in which persons and in-Hospital and pre-hospital providers can prepare for such events. Dr. Severance serves as a consultant and Special Instructor for the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety concentrating in these areas. He was instrumental in initiating North Carolina's Counter-Terrorism Task Force, and sits on the NC Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Committee. Dr. Severance also concentrates upon various Environmental Injuries including prevention measures, of interest to general audiences as well as medical audiences, including heat-related and water-related injuries and diseases!
