  1. Expalin the pathophysiology of acute and chronic sinusitis
    • Describe the methods of diagnosing acute and chronic sinusitis
    • Determine cost-effective treatment for acute and chronic sinusitis
  2. Explain the varied mechanisms and presentations of anaphylaxis
    • Describe appropriate treatment of anaphylaxis, emphasizing treatment with epinephrine
    • Explain why physicians and office staff should maintain proficiency in anaphylaxis management
  3. Discuss the pathophysiology of asthma
    • Describe how asthma symptoms do not always correlate with asthma severity
    • Explain the concepts of step care guideline - driven asthma management
  4. Explain the mechanism of cough reflex
    • Describe the most common causes of chronic cough in immunocompetent non-smoking adults with normal chest x-rays
    • Describe diagnostic empiric trials of therapy targeting the 3 most common causes of chronic cough in adults
  5. Explain the pathophysiology of allergic conjunctivitis
    • Describe other abnormalities of the eye which may have similar symptoms
    • Determine the appropriate course of treatment and when referral to an ophthalmologist should be considered.
  6. Explain the different types of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
    • Describe conditions that mimic rhinitis
    • Determine appropriate evaluation, diagnostic studies and treatment plans.
  7. Explain the various types of reaction to and insect sting
    • Describe appropriate treatment for each type of reaction
    • Determine which patients can safely be managed by the primary care physician and which patient should be referred to a board-certified allergy-immunology specialist

Sonal R. Patel, MD, MS
Pediatric/Adult Allergy & Immunology
White Memorial Pediatric Medical Group
Los Angeles, CA

Dr. Patel is the Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at White Memorial Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. She is Board Certified in Allergy and Clinical Immunology as well as Pediatrics.

Dr. Patel initially trained in Pediatrics a King-Drew Medical center in Los Angeles, she then went on to complete an Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at UCLA. She also completed a Masters of Science degree in Clinical Research from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

Dr. Patel also has a strong interest in working with inner-city patients. She is currently a Board Member of the American Lung Association in California (Los Angeles Leadership board). She is also on the Board of the Los Angeles Society of Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology. Her Clinical Interest includes Asthma and Atopic dermatitis.

Dr. Patel lives in Southern California with her husband and twin daughters.

G. Edward Stewart II, MD
Dr. Stewart received a B.S. degree in chemistry from Lambuth College in Jackson, TN and a B.S. degree in pharmacy from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 1979. After practicing pharmacy at the Methodist Hospitals of Memphis for five years he returned to the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and received his M.D. degree in 1988. He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Tennessee in 1991, then completed a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of South Florida in 1993. He completed a fellowship in Clinical Laboratory Immunology at the University of South Florida in 1994. He then joined Allergy and Asthma Care of Florida in Ocala, FL in 1994 where he continues to see patients and conduct clinical trials.

Dr. Stewart is board-certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology where he currently serves on the Rhinitis, Rhinosinusitis and Ocular Allergy Committee. He is also a fellow of the American College of Allergy, A sthma and Immunology. Dr. Stewart is a past-president of the Florida Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society and is a member of the American Medical Association, the Florida Medical Association and the Marion County Medical Society. Dr. Stewart also has an appointment as Affiliate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the University of South Florida in Tampa where he volunteers his time. He is also the President of the Marion County Medical Society (through August 2016).
