PROGRAM PURPOSE

The purpose of these lectures is to teach appropriate, comprehensive, compassionate family focused and culturally competent medical care for patients with developmental behavioral and educational challenges. Through disease state education, physicians will feel more comfortable with the presenting conditions and will be able to incorporate evidenced based care, medical treatments and “caring” for those with these conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder in children and adults and ADHD.

Children with developmental disabilities represent a diverse population with a variety of causes, a variety of conditions and a wide range of developmental, behavioral, and medical manifestations.

The care of children with developmental disabilities, therefore, requires an appreciation of the complexities of diagnosis, and management involving medical care, promotion of optimal development and education, and attention to social, emotional, environmental and economic factors that influence the children, the family and the community.

This series of lectures will provide for the audience a framework for understanding the complex set of conditions characterized as developmental disabilities. In addition, there will be an orientation to the genetic and environmental factors that result in developmental disabilities and we will offer strategies for addressing these challenges to promote optimal health and well being for the children.

Raun Melmed, MD, FAAP, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, is director of the Melmed Center in Scottsdale, Arizona and co-founder and medical director of the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center.
Dr. Melmed is on faculty at Arizona State University in Phoenix, the University of Arizona in Tucson and Creighton Medical School. He earned his medical degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and completed fellowship training at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston, where he was an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. He is a member of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is board certified in both Pediatrics and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
He has set up nationally recognized physician training programs for the early identification of infants and toddlers with developmental and behavioral concerns and has authored programs geared toward screening for autism spectrum disorders.
Dr. Melmed is an investigator of novel psychopharmacological agents and digital therapeutic devices for the treatment of ADHD, autism, Fragile X and related disorders. He studies include the identification of biomarkers in ASD as well as the development of diagnostic tools for developmental disorders.

I Leslie Rubin MD is Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Morehouse School of Medicine, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, Co-director of the Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Unit at Emory University, Medical Director of The Rubin Center for Autism and Developmental Pediatrics, and Founder of Break the Cycle of Health Disparities Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia.

As a Developmental Pediatrician, he has provided care for children and adults with developmental disabilities for decades, and in 2016 published the 3rd edition of his text: “Health Care for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Across the Lifespan, (Springer Switzerland)”

As an Environmental Pediatrician, he started a program in 2004 called: Break the Cycle of Children’s Environmental Health Disparities, to raise awareness of children’s environmental health disparities and cultivate future leaders. This program, now in its 15th year, has resulted in the publication of more than 100 student papers in 10 international journal supplements and 10 Books with Nova, publishers in their Public Health Series.

He is actively involved in a number of local, national and international organization and has received a several awards for his work.

To treat it as just a place to board your ship is to miss one of Europe’s most dynamic and culturally rich cities. We strongly recommend arriving two or three days early. This buffer not only mitigates the stress of potential travel delays but transforms the beginning of your vacation from a logistical chore into a deep cultural immersion. The city’s energy, a unique blend of Spanish passion and Catalan pride, is something best absorbed without the pressure of a ticking clock.

Upon arrival at Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), reaching the city center is straightforward. The Aerobus offers a direct and efficient connection to key points like Plaça de Catalunya. Taxis are readily available and provide door-to-door convenience, while the RENFE train is a cost-effective option connecting to the city's metro system. For your stay, consider basing yourself in the atmospheric Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) for its historic charm, the trendy El Born for its boutique and culinary scene, or the elegant Eixample district for its grand avenues and proximity to Modernista architecture.

To make the most of your time, consider this unhurried two-day itinerary:

**Day 1: The Genius of Gaudí & Modernisme**

Begin your day at the Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí's breathtaking and still-unfinished basilica. This is the city’s most iconic landmark for good reason. The experience of standing inside, as sunlight filters through the stained-glass windows and illuminates the forest-like columns, is unforgettable. A word of practical advice: booking tickets online weeks, or even months, in advance is not just a suggestion, it is essential to avoid disappointment.

From there, take a leisurely stroll or a short metro ride to Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona’s most elegant boulevard. Here you’ll find the “Block of Discord,” a single block showcasing wildly different styles by the city's top Modernista architects. The highlights are Gaudí’s Casa Batlló, with its skeletal balconies and dragon-scaled roof, and Casa Milà (La Pedrera), whose undulating stone façade resembles a seaside cliff. For lunch, immerse yourself in the sensory explosion of the Mercat de la Boqueria, just off the famous La Rambla. Alternatively, the blue Portbus (T3) provides shuttle service from the Columbus Monument at the foot of La Rambla. By arriving early, you will board your ship not in a rush, but with a deep appreciation for the Catalan jewel you’ve had the privilege to explore.

Palma De Mallorca, Spain

Palma de Mallorca is a pleasant surprise for many, offering a level of urban sophistication and history that far exceeds the typical Mediterranean island port. This is a genuinely rewarding stop, a compact and elegant city that beautifully balances grandeur with a relaxed seaside pace.

The city's soul is the magnificent Catedral-Basílica de Santa María, 'La Seu.' This Gothic masterpiece dominates the waterfront, but its true marvel lies within: a modernist interior intervention by Antoni Gaudí, whose wrought-iron canopy hangs like a crown jewel over the altar. Its sheer scale and the way light filters through its massive rose window are truly breathtaking.

From the cathedral, lose yourself in the labyrinthine lanes of the Casco Antiguo (Old Town). Malaga, Spain

This is the birthplace of Picasso, and the city honors its most famous son with the exceptional Museo Picasso, housing a significant collection of his works within a beautifully restored palace. The city’s appeal lies in its rich, visible layers of history. At the foot of the formidable Moorish Alcazaba—a wonderfully preserved fortress-palace that offers a more intimate alternative to Granada's Alhambra—lies a remarkably intact Roman Theatre. This juxtaposition of two great empires is a powerful sight and a testament to Malaga’s deep past.

Beyond these headline sites, the city itself is the main attraction. The historic center is a delightful labyrinth of marble-paved lanes, leading to grand plazas and the impressive, yet famously unfinished, Malaga Cathedral, affectionately nicknamed 'La Manquita' (The One-Armed Lady). For a taste of authentic local life, the Atarazanas Market is a feast for the senses, set within a stunning 19th-century iron building with an original Moorish gate. The redeveloped port area, Muelle Uno, offers a contemporary contrast with its modern promenade, shops, and the colorful cube of the Centre Pompidou Malaga. Seville is the grand prize for many, a city of operatic romance, flamenco, and monumental history. Reaching it requires a journey of approximately 90 minutes each way, making for a full and tightly scheduled day. Once there, the rewards are immense. The city is home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites: the breathtaking Alcázar, a masterpiece of Mudéjar architecture with stunning gardens; the Seville Cathedral, an immense Gothic structure that is the final resting place of Christopher Columbus, with its iconic Giralda bell tower offering panoramic views; and the Archivo de Indias, which houses invaluable records of the Spanish Empire. The primary experience lies within the ancient walls of its Medina and the hilltop Kasbah. Here, a labyrinth of narrow, winding alleys reveals the city’s true character. Expect a sensory overload in the best way: the scent of mint tea and exotic spices, the vibrant colors of leather goods and hand-woven carpets in the souks, and the evocative sound of the call to prayer echoing from minarets.

The energy of the Medina can be overwhelming, and navigating its maze-like streets while politely declining persistent vendors is part of the experience. For this reason, engaging a reputable local guide can be invaluable, transforming a potentially stressful day into a fascinating one. Beyond the markets, the American Legation Museum, the first American public property outside the United States, offers a quiet and intriguing slice of diplomatic history. For a moment of tranquility, find your way to the legendary Café Hafa. Clinging to a cliffside, its terraced seating offers sublime views across the Strait of Gibraltar, a perfect spot to reflect over a glass of sweet mint tea.

For those seeking dramatic scenery, a short drive to Cap Spartel offers breathtaking views from the northwesternmost point of mainland Africa, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Tangier rewards the curious and patient traveler with an authentic, unfiltered cultural experience that feels a world away from the ship.

At Sea - Cruising

Porto Leixoes, Portugal

Let’s be clear from the start: your ship docks at the commercial port of Leixões, but the treasure you’ve come to see is the city of Porto, a short ride away. And what a treasure it is. Porto is not a city of manicured perfection; it’s a place of soulful, gritty beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels utterly authentic. The city’s heart is the Ribeira district, a captivating tangle of medieval alleys and colorful, tile-clad houses stacked precariously along the Douro River.

Your day here is best spent on foot, so wear comfortable shoes for the city’s famous hills. A quintessential experience is walking across the upper deck of the magnificent Dom Luís I Bridge, an Eiffel-inspired masterpiece offering breathtaking views of the Ribeira on one side and the rooftops of Vila Nova de Gaia on the other. Gaia is the historic home of the world’s Port wine cellars, or “lodges.” We highly recommend choosing one—such as Taylor’s, Graham’s, or Sandeman—for a tour and tasting. Learning about the history and process of Port production right at the source is a highlight for many.

Back in Porto, don’t miss the São Bento train station, where stunning blue-and-white *azulejo* tile panels depict scenes from Portuguese history. For a different perspective, consider a short cruise on a traditional *rabelo* boat along the Douro. While the famous Livraria Lello bookstore is beautiful, be prepared for long queues that can consume significant time.
