PROGRAM TOPICS

The purpose of these lectures is to update clinicians/prescribers on pharmacological principles and practices that can be applied during Critical Care and Pulmonology interventions. The desired outcome is that attendees will adopt the stated learning objectives to improve their professional practice. A series of Pulmonary Diseases from COPD and Asthma to Sarcoid and Immunodeficiency will be presented. There are new guidelines for both Asthma and COPD. Sarcoid and Immunodeficiency are not uncommon but are missed frequently. The Critical Care lectures will be on Community-acquired Pneumonia which is one of the most common infections in humans. New guidelines came out late last year. Attendees will be able to treat these using the most up to date guidelines. Ethics will be taught in the manner of case reports. Both on the treatment of patients, their families and our colleagues. Ventilator Associated Pneumonia also has quite recent guidelines. Attendees will know how to prevent, treat and for how long to treat the pneumonia. The controversies surrounding Vitamin C and steroids in Septic Shock and Fluid resuscitation in Septic Shock will be discussed. Attendees will have a better idea of these.

    • Be up to date with 2019 Guidelines including the treatment of Severe Asthma and Uncontrolled Asthma
  6. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Be up to date with the new 2020 guidelines in the diagnosis and treatment of COPD
  7. Sarcoid
    • Attendees will have a new approach to the diagnosis, Treatment of Sarcoid and know the Multiple drugs for Sarcoid
  8. Immunodeficiency (ID)
    • Attendees will be able to treat Primary ID, Common ID and Variable ID. Learn diagnosis, treatment and asses cases.
  9. Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
    • Attendees will be able to prevent , diagnose and treat VAP according to new guidelines
  10. Ethics
    • The Attendees will hear cases and I will ask their opinions. They may also present their own cases.
  11. Vit C, Steroids Fluid Resuscitation in Septic Shock.
    • Attendees will be aware of Septic Shock controversies surrounding the use of Vit C and Steroids and fluid resuscitation
  12. Community-acquiredPneumonia (CAP)
    • Attendees will learn to diagnose, treat according to new guidelines. Also who to admit to hospital or even the ICU.

Mark Rumbak, MD
Dr. Rumbak is a Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Occupational Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida. He is the Director of Bronchoscopy & Chief in the Clinical Research Unit, Pulmonary & Critical Care at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital, Tampa, Florida.



Dr. Rumbak is from Johannesburg, South Africa, where he went to medical school and did his residency and Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical care medicine. He came to the US IN 1987, spent five years at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, and then came to the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr Rumbak's main interest is interventional pulmonary medicine, including pulmonary arterial hypertension. He is the Governor for Florida for the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a full professor and is on staff at four hospitals including the James A Haley Hospital, Tampa General Hospital and Florida Hospital, Tampa.

Tammie Lee Demler received her Doctor of Pharmacy, Master of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Science degrees at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo.

Dr Demler is a dually Board-Certified Specialist in both Psychiatric and Geriatric Pharmacy and is currently the Director of Pharmacy Services and Pharmacy residency training at the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center.

She holds numerous academic appointments, including Clinical Associate Professor for SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, D'Youville College School of Pharmacy, University of Florida School of Pharmacy, and Clinical Instructor for the Erie County Community College Pharmacy Technician Certification Program.

She collaborates with both the National Association of the Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) to develop board examinations that establish the minimum competencies expected for new practitioners for practice in an ever changing clinical environment. Prior to embarking on her academic and institutional career, Dr. Demler's clinical practice focused on ambulatory care in community pharmacy.

Dr. Demler has authored and co-authored numerous original research articles and expert reviews for print media. She is a regular contributor to U.S. Pharmacist and reviewer for Pharmacist's Letter.

Prior to launching Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Nursing Practice, Dr. Demler authored a chapter on insomnia in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy's (ACCP's) Ambulatory Care Self-Assessment. She also has provided expert pharmacotherapeutic consultation for other books such as the Side Effects of Drugs: Annual Volume 36 and Clinical Consult to Psychiatric Nursing for Advanced Practice . She has presented medication continuing education programs internationally and nationally, and is an Academic Educator for the New York State Medicaid Prescriber Education program sponsored by the New York Department of Health.

Dr. Demler served as President of both the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York and the Pharmacists Association of Western New York. Dr. Demler is also a local media personality, hosting her own weekly TV talk show as well as a weekly community affairs radio segment. She has won a number of prestigious national, state, and local awards acknowledging both her professional and community-based contributions.

Belfast presents a compelling duality: a city reborn from a complex past and the gateway to one of the world's most dramatic coastlines. The choice of how to spend your day here is the most significant one you'll make. The city itself is anchored by the Titanic Quarter, home to the stunning, architecturally significant Titanic Belfast. This is not a dusty museum, but an immersive experience that tells the story of the legendary ship from its conception and construction to its tragic end. Nearby, you can board the SS Nomadic, the last remaining White Star Line vessel.

For a deeper understanding of the city's more recent history, a Black Cab tour is essential. These tours, often led by drivers with personal connections to the era, provide a balanced and poignant narrative of 'The Troubles' as you view the political murals of the Shankill and Falls Roads and the towering Peace Wall that still divides them. The alternative is a full-day excursion north to the Antrim Coast. Be advised, this is an all-or-nothing trip; committing to the coast means forgoing a proper exploration of Belfast. The decision rests on your priorities: profound urban history or breathtaking natural wonder.

At Sea - Cruising

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik is a capital city that feels more like a creative, welcoming town, set against a backdrop of dramatic, raw nature. Its compact, walkable core makes it an excellent port to explore on foot, offering a fascinating blend of contemporary design, Viking history, and quirky charm.

The skyline is dominated by the magnificent Hallgrímskirkja church; ascending its tower provides a panoramic view of the city’s colorful rooftops and the surrounding bay. A short walk leads to the waterfront, where the stunning, glass-paneled Harpa Concert Hall glimmers beside the Old Harbour. This area is the departure point for whale-watching excursions and is lined with outstanding seafood restaurants. For a dose of history, the National Museum of Iceland offers a comprehensive look at the nation's past, from settlement to the present day.

With a single day, a choice must be made. You can either immerse yourself in the city's culture or venture into Iceland's legendary landscapes. The famed Golden Circle—a circuit including the tectonic plates at Þingvellir National Park, the powerful Gullfoss waterfall, and the erupting Geysir geothermal area—is a full-day commitment. It's an unforgettable experience but will consume nearly all your time ashore.

A more manageable alternative is a visit to the Blue Lagoon for a soak in its geothermal, silica-rich waters. It’s about a 50-minute drive from the port, and pre-booking is absolutely essential, often weeks or months in advance.

We recommend choosing one path for your day: either fully explore the vibrant streets, shops, and museums of Reykjavik, or dedicate your time to one of the major natural attractions. Trying to do both will likely feel rushed and incomplete.

Akureyri, Iceland

Nestled at the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, Akureyri is a surprisingly green and vibrant town that serves as the gateway to the spectacular natural wonders of the north. While often called Iceland's 'second city,' it's best understood not as a metropolis, but as a charming and highly walkable base for profound encounters with nature.

The town itself is a pleasure to explore on foot. A short walk from the pier leads to the town center, where you can ascend the steps to the iconic Akureyrarkirkja, a Lutheran church whose commanding presence offers fine views over the fjord. Nearby, the Akureyri Botanical Garden is a peaceful oasis and one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world, showcasing a remarkable collection of arctic and temperate flora.

However, Akureyri’s primary value for most visitors lies in the world-class excursions it enables. The most popular is a trip to Goðafoss, the ‘Waterfall of the Gods,’ a powerful and historically significant cascade that is both beautiful and easily accessible. Akureyri provides the perfect balance: a delightful town experience combined with direct access to some of Iceland’s most essential landscapes.

Liverpool, England

Liverpool greets you directly at its historic heart. Your ship docks at Pier Head, placing you immediately before the "Three Graces," the trio of majestic buildings that define one of the world's most famous waterfronts. This exceptional access makes Liverpool an incredibly rewarding and walkable port of call.

Liverpool is not a city of quaint English charm; it is a proud, resilient, and deeply creative place with a story to tell on every corner.
