PROGRAM PURPOSE

Kidney disorders are frequent in general practice, but often are considered complex and difficult to manage. Participants will analyze simple and complex acid base disorders, discuss the approach to patients with sodium and potassium disorders, identify risk factors for chronic kidney disease and implement strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality, and learn about typical presentations and treatment options for patients with glomerular disorders, with the goal to increase participants' ability to confidently manage patients with these disorders in their daily practice.

  1. Acid bases disorders
    • Participants will be able to analyze simple and complex acid base disorders
  2. Potassium disorders
    • Participants will utilize a structured approach to the diagnosis of patients with hypokalemia and understand the management of hyperkalemia
  3. Sodium disorders
    • Participants will determine the excess or deficit in body water appropriately and choose appropriate treatments
  4. Nephrolithiasis
    • Participants will implement an appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategy for patients with kidney stones
  5. Chronic kidney disease
    • Participants will identify risk factors, assess the severity, and predict the risk of progression of chronic kidney disease, and implement interventions to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality
  6. Glomerular diseases
    • Participants will identify common primary and secondary glomerular diseases, recognize typical presentations, and describe treatment options

Dr. Lenz is a general nephrologist who serves as Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. Dr. Lenz has (co)authored some 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, he participated in both federally and industry-funded clinical trials and served on data safety monitoring boards.

Dr. Lenz is Medical Director of Inpatient Dialysis, UHealth Tower and Jackson Memorial Hospital and Medical Director of DaVita North Miami Outpatient Dialysis Center, he served as Interim Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension for three years and now is Vice Chair of Medicine. For more than a decade, Dr. Lenz has been the Director of the Nephrology Fellowship Training Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he trained some 60 fellows over the past 13 years.

Dr. Stephen P. Stone is professor and Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Dermatology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois.
Dr. Stone graduated from Tufts University, and received his medical training at New York University School of Medicine. After serving with the U.S. Navy, he completed a residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Stone then moved to Springfield, Illinois where he maintained a private practice for more than two decades before moving to his current university position. 

He has received numerous honors and citations throughout his distinguished career including Honorary Membership in the AAD, selection for" Best Doctors in America", "Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care" and "Who's Who in America'. He is past Editor-in-Chief of Dialogues in Dermatology, the AAD's monthly audio journal and served as the 67th president of the Academy from March 2006 through February 2007. 

His interests in dermatology include psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases, acne, occupational dermatology, and skin cancer. He has been involved as an investigator or subinvestigator in more than 40 clinical studies, more than half involving treatment of psoriasis.

Dr. Stone has given more than 220 lectures and Grand Rounds presentations outside of his university, including such international venues as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Guangzhou, China, the Icelandic Dermatology Association, in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Congresso da Sociedade Brasileira Dermatologia, Curitiba and Salvador, Brazil, the Philippine Dermatological Society Annual Meeting in Manila, Republic of the Philippines, the Canadian Dermatological Association, Dermatrends III in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Hong Kong, the International Congress of Dermatology, in Prague, Czech Republic, and the World Congress of Dermatology in Vancouver BC, Canada, Kalambakas, Greece, and Taupo, New Zealand.

To arrive a day before your cruise or depart immediately after is to miss the very soul of Catalonia. We strongly encourage you to frame your voyage with at least two or three days here, allowing Barcelona’s vibrant, artistic, and delicious culture to fully unfold.

This is a city that rewards immersion. It’s a place of grand boulevards and hidden medieval alleys, of avant-garde art and centuries-old traditions. It’s where the Mediterranean spirit of leisure blends with a fierce Catalan pride, creating an energy that is utterly unique. Let us help you craft the perfect pre- or post-cruise stay.

### Day 1: The Ancient Heart – Gothic Quarter & El Born

Begin your exploration by losing yourself in the **Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter)**. This is the historical center of Barcelona, a captivating labyrinth of narrow, winding streets that open unexpectedly onto sun-drenched plazas. While walking, you’ll stumble upon the magnificent **Barcelona Cathedral** (not to be confused with Sagrada Família), a soaring example of Catalan Gothic architecture. Take a moment in the serene cloister, home to a flock of 13 geese. The real joy here is aimless wandering, discovering artisan shops, quiet courtyards, and the palpable weight of history.

Adjacent to the Gothic Quarter is the trendier, more bohemian district of **El Born**. It shares the medieval layout but has a distinctly more artistic vibe. Here you’ll find the superb **Museu Picasso**, which offers an unparalleled look into the formative years of the artist. Just a short walk away is the breathtaking **Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar**, a church so beloved by locals it’s often called the “Cathedral of the Sea.” El Born is also a culinary hotspot, perfect for an evening of *pintxos* (Basque-style tapas) and local wine.

### Day 2: The Genius of Gaudí & The Elegance of Eixample

Today is dedicated to the architectural visionary who defined Barcelona: Antoni Gaudí. Start at his magnum opus, the still-unfinished **La Sagrada Família**. Our most critical tip: **book your tickets online, weeks or even months in advance.** This is not a suggestion; it is a necessity. The exterior is a marvel of symbolic sculpture, but the interior is where the true magic lies. Stepping inside is like entering an ethereal forest, with columns branching out like trees and kaleidoscopic light filtering through the stained-glass windows. It is a profound experience you will never forget.

From there, take a stroll down the elegant **Passeig de Gràcia**, Barcelona’s answer to the Champs-Élysées. This grand avenue is home to two more of Gaudí’s masterpieces. **Casa Batlló**, with its skeletal balconies and dragon-scaled roof, feels like a fairytale come to life. The world-famous **Mercado de La Boqueria** (just off Las Ramblas) is an icon, but it can be overwhelmingly crowded. For a slightly more local experience, we recommend the **Mercat de Santa Caterina** near the cathedral, identifiable by its spectacular, wavy mosaic roof. It’s a fantastic place to see locals shopping for produce and to grab a superb lunch at one of its market bars.

When dining, look for Catalan specialties. Start with *pa amb tomàquet* (bread rubbed with tomato, garlic, and olive oil), the simple but perfect foundation of any meal. Indulge in plates of *jamón ibérico*, crispy *patatas bravas*, and fresh seafood from the nearby coast. For a memorable meal, explore the seaside neighborhood of **La Barceloneta** for its excellent paella and seafood restaurants.

### Practical Logistics for the Cruiser

Barcelona is wonderfully easy to navigate, making a pre- or post-cruise stay a seamless experience.

* **Arrival:** From El Prat Airport (BCN), the **Aerobus** is the most efficient way to reach the city center (Plaça de Catalunya). Taxis are readily available and offer door-to-door convenience.
* **Accommodation:** For first-time visitors, staying in **El Born**, the **Gothic Quarter**, or the elegant **Eixample** district provides a central and atmospheric base.
* **Getting Around:** The city is very walkable, but the **Metro** system is clean, efficient, and will save your feet. A multi-day Hola Barcelona Travel Card or simply using your contactless card at the turnstiles makes it incredibly easy.
* **To the Cruise Port:** The main cruise terminal, **Moll Adossat**, is not within easy walking distance of the city center. A **taxi** is the simplest and most direct option (around 15-20 minutes from the central areas). Alternatively, the blue **Portbus (T3)** shuttle runs from the Columbus Monument at the foot of Las Ramblas directly to the terminals.

Allowing yourself this extra time transforms Barcelona from a logistical checkpoint into a highlight of your entire vacation. It’s a city that deserves to be savored, and you deserve the time to do it right.

An overnight stay in La Spezia transforms it from a simple gateway into a strategic and authentic Ligurian base camp. This extended time removes the usual pressure of a port day, allowing for a thoughtful, two-part exploration of two of Italy’s most celebrated regions: Tuscany and the Ligurian Riviera.

On your first day, consider an immersive journey into the heart of the Renaissance. Florence is readily accessible via a direct train (approx. 2-2.5 hours) from La Spezia Centrale. This isn't a rushed highlights tour; it's a full day to engage with the city. Pre-book tickets to see Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia and the masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery. With time on your side, you can wander across the Ponte Vecchio, climb Giotto's Bell Tower for panoramic views, and still have time for a leisurely lunch. The real luxury is the evening; enjoy an authentic Florentine dinner before catching a late train back, experiencing the city's magic after the day-trippers have departed. Alternatively, for a more focused day, the iconic sights of Pisa—the Leaning Tower, Cathedral, and Baptistery in the Piazza dei Miracoli—are just an hour away by train, leaving ample time to also explore the charming walled city of Lucca nearby.

Returning to La Spezia for the evening offers a wonderful contrast. This is your chance to live like a local. Take part in the evening *passeggiata* (stroll) along the palm-lined harbor, Passeggiata Costantino Morin. Find a small bar for an *aperitivo* and then seek out a trattoria for a true Ligurian dinner. This is the home of pesto, so trying fresh trofie pasta with the fragrant, basil-rich sauce is essential. Also look for fresh seafood, or regional specialties like *testaroli* pancakes or savory vegetable pies.

For your second day, the dramatic coastline of the Cinque Terre awaits. A short train ride from La Spezia Centrale is the most efficient way to hop between the five villages. Start in Riomaggiore, then perhaps hike a portion of the scenic trail or continue by train to Manarola for its classic postcard view. Vernazza’s harbor is a perfect lunch spot, while Monterosso al Mare offers the only significant stretch of beach. For a different perspective, a ferry from La Spezia’s harbor provides breathtaking views of the villages clinging to the cliffs. For those seeking similar beauty with fewer crowds, we recommend the ferry to Portovenere. Before departing, take time to appreciate La Spezia itself. The daily morning market in Piazza Cavour is a vibrant slice of local life, and the pedestrianized Via del Prione offers pleasant shopping. The Castello di San Giorgio, high above the city, provides a final, sweeping view of the Gulf of Poets—a fitting end to a rich, two-day immersion in the best of Italy.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Civitavecchia serves as the maritime gateway to Rome, and it's essential to approach a day here with a clear and realistic plan. The 'Eternal City' is a 60- to 90-minute journey from the port, a commute that requires factoring travel time into your precious hours ashore. The most common and efficient method is the regional train, which connects Civitavecchia's station (a short walk or shuttle from the port) with Rome's key transit hubs. For those seeking more comfort and a direct route to specific sites, pre-booked private transfers are an excellent, albeit more costly, alternative.

With time being the most valuable currency, a successful day in Rome means choosing a focus. Attempting to conquer everything results in a frantic blur. We recommend choosing one of two paths. The first is a deep dive into Ancient Rome: pre-book tickets to explore the staggering scale of the Colosseum, walk through the ruins of the Roman Forum where emperors once stood, and marvel at the architectural genius of the Pantheon. This area is largely walkable and provides a cohesive historical narrative.

Alternatively, focus on the grandeur of Vatican City. Stand in the embrace of Bernini's colonnades in St. Peter's Square and enter the breathtaking St. Peter's Basilica, a monument to faith and art. A visit to the Vatican Museums to see the Sistine Chapel is possible, but requires strict, timed-entry tickets and a significant time commitment that will likely preclude other sightseeing.

Whichever path you choose, build in moments for the simple Roman pleasures that give the city its soul. Find a small piazza, order a quick espresso at a bar, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, or savor a scoop of authentic gelato. For those who prefer to avoid the journey altogether, Civitavecchia itself offers a pleasant waterfront, a bustling market, and the impressive Forte Michelangelo, providing a relaxed, local Italian experience.

Naples, Italy

Naples is less a polished tourist destination and more a vibrant, chaotic, and profoundly authentic slice of Southern Italy. As a port of call, it’s a world-class launchpad to some of history’s most significant sites and Europe’s most breathtaking coastlines. Your challenge isn't finding something to do; it's accepting you can't possibly do it all in one day.

For most, the primary draw lies just outside the city: the astonishing ruins of Pompeii. Buried by Vesuvius in A.D. 79, this ancient city offers an unparalleled window into Roman life. We strongly recommend a guided tour here; the site is vast, and an expert can bring the silent stones of its villas, temples, and brothels to life. For a more intimate and often better-preserved alternative, consider nearby Herculaneum, which was entombed in mud rather than ash, preserving incredible details like wooden beams and mosaics.

If you prefer legendary beauty to ancient history, the Bay of Naples delivers. A hydrofoil can whisk you across the water to the glamorous Isle of Capri, famed for its dramatic Faraglioni rocks, chic boutiques, and the ethereal Blue Grotto (weather permitting). Alternatively, a drive along the coast brings you to Sorrento, a charming town perched on cliffs with stunning views and a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for sipping limoncello and soaking in the scenery.

Should you choose to dive into Naples itself, be prepared for an intense and rewarding experience. The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a labyrinth of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and baroque churches. The National Archaeological Museum is an absolute must, housing the priceless mosaics, frescoes, and artifacts recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum. And, of course, there is the pizza. This is its birthplace, and enjoying an authentic Neapolitan pizza is not just a meal, but a cultural imperative. Naples is gritty, loud, and utterly unforgettable—a port that rewards the curious traveler with an experience of raw, unfiltered Italy.
