PORTS OF CALL

Singapore, Singapore

Singapore presents a compelling paradox: a meticulously planned city-state that bursts with spontaneous cultural energy. While its reputation for order and cleanliness is well-deserved, the true reward for visitors lies in the seamless fusion of futuristic vision and deeply rooted heritage. The city’s efficient and immaculate MRT (subway) system makes independent exploration straightforward and is the recommended way to navigate.

The skyline is dominated by the Marina Bay area, a testament to architectural ambition. A visit to Gardens by the Bay is essential. This is not merely a park, but a botanical wonderland featuring the iconic Supertree Grove and two massive, climate-controlled conservatories: the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, the latter housing a stunning indoor waterfall. The entire complex offers a welcome, air-conditioned respite from the tropical humidity.

Beyond the modern marvels, Singapore's soul resides in its distinct ethnic neighborhoods. You can realistically explore one or two in a day. Chinatown offers a vibrant streetscape, the impressive Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, and access to the Maxwell Food Centre—an ideal spot for an authentic lunch. Nearby, Kampong Glam (the Arab Quarter) is centered around the golden-domed Sultan Mosque and the trendy, independent boutiques of Haji Lane. For a full sensory immersion, Little India buzzes with color, spice-scented air, and the bustling Tekka Centre market.

The definitive Singaporean experience is culinary, found not in fine dining rooms but in its legendary hawker centres. These open-air food courts are a UNESCO-recognized cultural treasure, offering an incredible array of expertly prepared and affordable dishes, from Hainanese chicken rice to satay. For a touch of colonial history, the area around the Singapore River reveals grand British architecture, with the iconic Raffles Hotel offering a chance to sample a classic (though pricey) Singapore Sling. Given the heat, it is wise to pace your day, alternating between outdoor sights and the comfort of indoor attractions.

Penang, Malaysia

Penang’s allure is concentrated in its capital, George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Southeast Asia’s most captivating and well-preserved colonial cities. As you step off the pier, you are immediately immersed in a living museum where centuries of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and British colonial influences converge. The city is best explored on foot, allowing for spontaneous discoveries down narrow lanes.

The core experience is wandering through the historic center. Admire the intricate architecture of Chinese clan houses like the magnificent Khoo Kongsi, and see the vibrant colors of Hindu temples and the serene elegance of mosques. A major highlight is the city’s whimsical street art; the interactive murals by artist Ernest Zacharevic have become iconic landmarks in themselves, creating a delightful urban scavenger hunt. For a different perspective, a ride in a traditional trishaw offers a leisurely way to absorb the city’s atmosphere.

However, Penang’s most celebrated contribution to the world is its food. The city is a culinary paradise, and its legendary street food is both accessible and exceptional. We recommend seeking out hawker stalls for authentic dishes like Char Kway Teow (stir-fried rice noodles) and the tangy, spicy noodle soup, Assam Laksa.

For those willing to venture beyond the city center, a taxi ride to the Kek Lok Si Temple, a sprawling hilltop Buddhist complex, offers breathtaking architecture and panoramic views. Similarly, a trip up Penang Hill via its funicular railway provides a cool escape and a stunning vista of the island. Both require a significant portion of your day, so plan accordingly.

At Sea - Cruising

Phuket, Thailand

The white marble Big Buddha statue in Phuket, Thailand, glowing under a vibrant pink and purple sunset. A premier shore excursion destination for cruise passengers, offering panoramic views of the Andaman Sea and the lush Nakkerd Hills.
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, and its scale requires a focused plan for a successful day in port. Rather than attempting to see everything, choose one or two key experiences. The island’s geography often presents a choice between its cultural heart and its famous coastline, as travel between them can consume valuable time.

For a day rich in culture and atmosphere, head to Phuket Old Town. Here, the beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese shophouses along Thalang and Dibuk roads create a photogenic streetscape filled with boutique shops, art galleries, and excellent coffee shops. It’s a walkable, engaging area that offers a genuine sense of place far from the beach crowds. From town, a visit to the Nakkerd Hills to see the Big Buddha is highly recommended. This 45-meter marble statue is an impressive sight, but the true reward is the breathtaking 360-degree view of the island and the surrounding sea.

If the beach is your priority, bypass the intensity of Patong for the southern coast. Beaches like Kata, Karon, or the more secluded Nai Harn offer beautiful sand and clear water with a more relaxed ambiance. Select one beach to settle into, enjoy the water, and sample the local cuisine from a beachfront restaurant.

For those seeking a truly dramatic natural landscape, a boat tour of Phang Nga Bay is an unforgettable option. Famous for its sheer limestone karsts rising vertically from the emerald-green water, this excursion is a full-day commitment and is best arranged as a pre-booked tour to ensure a timely return. Ultimately, a great day in Phuket is about depth, not breadth—choose your focus and immerse yourself fully.

Why Protect your Trip?

Whether you’re planning your next trip or you recently booked one, travel insurance can help smooth over many unexpected travel glitches—while putting your mind at ease, knowing you’re off the hook for covered expenses that could arise from them.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can provide you benefits and professional support when a covered situation comes up before or during your trip. The following examples may qualify for benefits:

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen
  • Missing your cruise departure after a covered flight delay

You also can contact our travel protection partner Allianz Global Assistance’s 24/7, award-winning customer service for on-the-go assistance with issues like a medical emergency, replacing your lost passport, or making reservations around the world. To be eligible for a time-sensitive waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusions, purchase your travel insurance plan within 14 days of initial trip deposit (other purchase requirements and conditions apply). Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.

24-HOUR ASSISTANCE

Provides around-the-clock support during your trip. Allianz Global Assistance’s staff of multilingual problem solvers can help you with medical, legal, and travel-related emergencies whenever they happen. Medical assistance may include, but is not limited to:

  • Medical triage with referrals to local prescreened medical providers
