Dr. Patel received his Medical degree from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom and completed his clinical fellowships in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology in Western Australia. He received his PhD from University of Sydney.

He completed a 3-year post-doctoral research fellowship in Clinical and Translational Research in viral hepatitis at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, San Diego, CA and Duke Clinical Research Institute, Durham NC. He was on faculty at Duke University 2004-2015, and is now at University of Toronto since 2016. His research interests include early phase clinical therapeutic trials for viral hepatitis and NASH fibrosis, and the development non-invasive biomarkers of fibrogenesis.

Martin H. Poleski, MD,CM, FACP, AGAF

Professor of Medicine, Duke University

Dr. Poleski is currently Professor of Medicine at Duke University in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Duke University. He was Chief of Gastroenterology at Duke Regional Hospital (DRH) and Director of the Endoscopy from 2008 to 2016.

Dr. Poleski created the modern DRH Gastroenterology Department, starting with one Gastroenterologist in 2008, and now includes 8 Gastroenterologist. He is currently a full time Professor of Medicine at Duke University with a full time practice at Duke University clinics and endoscopy centers.

Dr. Poleski graduated McGill University, Montreal, in 1973 with an MD. He did his Internal medicine training at The University of Toronto and McGill University. In academic year 1975-76 he was Chief Medical Resident at The Jewish General Hospital of McGill University. He did a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Memorial Sloan Kettering , part of the Cornell Hospitals in New York City.

After completing his fellowship he returned to the Jewish General hospital as a consultant in Gastroenterology, developed the first Inflammatory Bowel Disease center at that hospital and at McGill University. He eventually rose in the ranks to become an Assistant Professor of Medicine at McGill University.

He joined the Scripps Clinic Medical Group in La Jolla , California at the end of 1992 as a consultant in Gastroenterology. He subsequently became Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and Director of the Fellowship program in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Scripps clinic.

He also had an appointment at UCSD as Clinical Professor of Medicine. In the summer of 2003 he joined the faculty of Duke University as Professor of Medicine and senior consultant in Gastroenterology. He has continued his interest in inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD), involved in clinical studies and having a clinic at Duke University Medical Center dedicated to IBD.

Think of it as easing into vacation mode. Flying in the day of your cruise introduces unnecessary risk—a single flight delay or misplaced bag can jeopardize your entire trip. By arriving early, you trade that anxiety for the sophisticated, laid-back ambiance of the “Venice of America.” The city’s primary airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL), is exceptionally convenient, located just a few miles from both the cruise terminals at Port Everglades and the city's best hotels. A short taxi or rideshare trip will have you checked in and ready to explore in no time.

**Your Pre-Cruise Itinerary Suggestion:**

**Day 1: Canals, Culture, and Cuisine**

After settling into your hotel, your first experience should be the one that defines the city: its waterways. Forget the rental car and embrace the Water Taxi. Dedicate your morning to the iconic Fort Lauderdale Beach. Rent a lounge chair and simply relax, or take a long walk along the signature “wave wall.” The atmosphere is vibrant yet far more relaxed than its southern neighbor, Miami Beach.

For the afternoon, you have two excellent, contrasting options:

1. **Cultural Immersion:** Visit the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. This historic 1920s estate is a true gem, offering a glimpse into Old Florida’s artistic and whimsical past. The house itself is filled with original art and furnishings, but the real star is the surrounding 35 acres of pristine barrier island habitat, complete with tropical gardens, a hibiscus garden, and even a resident population of monkeys. It’s an accessible, enriching cultural experience that feels a world away from the city bustle.

2. **Wilderness Adventure:** Experience the Florida Everglades. Several reputable operators offer half-day tours that include transportation and an unforgettable airboat ride. Skimming across the “River of Grass” is a thrilling experience, providing a profound sense of this unique ecosystem’s vastness. You’re almost guaranteed to see alligators in their natural habitat, along with a variety of wading birds. It’s a fantastic adventure that provides a dramatic counterpoint to the coastal elegance of the city.

By the time you wake up on embarkation day, you’ll be refreshed, acclimated, and already in a vacation mindset. The short, stress-free transfer to Port Everglades will feel like a simple next step, not a frantic race. Starting your journey this way ensures you board your ship ready to enjoy every moment, and that, in our view, is the foundation of a truly great vacation.

At Sea - Cruising

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan offers one of the most sophisticated and accessible experiences in the Caribbean. Unlike ports requiring long transfers to see anything of value, Old San Juan greets you immediately upon disembarkation. This 500-year-old walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored independently on foot, allowing you to bypass crowded bus tours and move at your own pace.

Your priority should be the two massive citadels guarding the coast. We recommend starting at Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fortification in the New World, before walking the scenic coastal trail to the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The sheer scale of these defenses is humbling, and the expansive green lawn leading to El Morro—often dotted with kites—provides a dramatic contrast to the deep blue Atlantic.

Between the forts lies a grid of blue cobblestone streets (adoquines) lined with vibrant colonial architecture. The joy here is aimless wandering, though the heat can be intense; stay hydrated and wear sturdy walking shoes to navigate the hills. For a cultural pause, visit the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the resting place of Ponce de León.

Culinary exploration is essential. Skip the generic tourist traps near the pier and head deeper into the city. Seek out mofongo (garlicky mashed plantains) at a local staple like El Jibarito or Café Puerto Rico. While the nearby beaches of Condado are beautiful, they require a taxi and contend with traffic. Unless you have visited before, we advise dedicating your day entirely to the history and atmosphere within the city walls, finishing perhaps with a Piña Colada at Barrachina, right in the heart of the old town.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Tortola is the lush, mountainous heart of the British Virgin Islands, offering a more subdued and nature-focused experience than many of its Caribbean neighbors. The port at Road Town is primarily a gateway, and the island’s true appeal is found by exploring its winding roads and hidden coves.

A short taxi ride leads to Cane Garden Bay, a classic Caribbean crescent of white sand and calm, turquoise water, lined with casual beach bars. For a more secluded experience, Smuggler’s Cove offers excellent snorkeling in a protected bay. For panoramic views, a trip to Sage Mountain National Park reveals a canopy of tropical forest and trails overlooking the surrounding archipelago.

A visit to the Callwood Rum Distillery in Cane Garden Bay provides a rustic glimpse into the island's past. This centuries-old, family-run operation still uses original equipment, offering a truly authentic taste of local history. Tortola is best suited for travelers seeking stunning scenery and a relaxed pace, rather than extensive shopping or numerous historical landmarks.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

A long stretch of white sand at Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg. Turquoise waters and beachfront hotels sit beneath rolling green hills, just a short walk from the St. Maarten cruise pier.

St. Maarten offers a unique geopolitical curiosity: a 37-square-mile island divided between the Netherlands and France. While the cruise pier in Philipsburg (Dutch side) is often crowded with multiple mega-ships, the island’s dual personality allows for a highly customizable day if you plan strategically.

Philipsburg itself is the commercial engine. Front Street is lined with duty-free jewelry and electronics stores; while convenient for shoppers, it can feel somewhat manufactured. For a more relaxed immediate option, the boardwalk along Great Bay offers decent beach bars and a view of the ships, though the water clarity here lags behind the rest of the island.

To experience the island's true charm, we recommend crossing the border to the French side. The atmosphere shifts perceptibly in Marigot, with its open-air markets and colonial architecture, though it has been slower to recover from past hurricanes than the Dutch side. For the sophisticated traveler, the village of Grand Case is the highlight. Known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean, it features exceptional French-Creole cuisine in open-air "lolos" (local barbecue stands) and high-end bistros alike.

Regarding beaches, you have distinct choices. Maho Beach offers the famous, adrenaline-fueled spectacle of jumbo jets landing just overhead—it is noisy, crowded, and absolutely unique. For a classic European beach day, head to Orient Bay on the French side for white sand and upscale beach clubs.

A critical note on logistics: Traffic on St. Maarten can be notoriously heavy, particularly in the late afternoon. If venturing to the French side, allow ample buffer time for the return trip to Philipsburg.
