Dr. George E. MacKinnon III began responsibilities as Founding Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Wisconsin October 1, 2015. His primary academic appointment is as Professor of Pharmacy Administration with secondary appointments within the School of Medicine in the Institute for Health and Equity (Division of Population Health Improvement), Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center.

Dr. MacKinnon received both his BS (Pharmacy) and MS (Hospital Pharmacy) from University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. He completed two-years of post-graduate clinical pharmacy residency training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, earning his PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Loyola University Chicago.

Over the past 30 years he has held academic appointments in medicine and pharmacy engaging in clinical practice, research, teaching, and academic administration. His previous appointments include Founding Dean of Pharmacy & Vice Provost for Health Sciences at Roosevelt University Chicago, Vice President of Academic Affairs with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and Director of Global Health Economics & Outcomes Research of Abbott Laboratories, in Chicago.

Dr. MacKinnon has engaged in significant curricular pharmacy innovation (e.g., accelerated graduation and non- traditional pathways, integrated curricula, and interprofessional education) and post-graduate training development. He taught one of the first required courses in health economics and outcomes assessment and is Editor of the textbook, Understanding Health Outcomes and Pharmacoeconomic. His research interests align in expanding pharmacist care models (e.g., primary care, pharmacogenomics, immunizations).

In her role at MCW, Professor MacKinnon is responsible for developing corporate partnerships, activities and services that support the creation of new pharmacy practice models. Professor MacKinnon has over 25 years of experience in teaching and has assisted in the establishment of three previous academic pharmacy programs, having served in the roles of Director of Experiential Education and Director of Professional Laboratories.

Professor MacKinnon has practiced in institutional and community pharmacy practice settings throughout her career. Professor MacKinnon is currently engaged with local and state immunization grants to support pharmacists’ role in optimizing and expanding immunization access in Wisconsin.

David Weiland, Jr., MD

David Weiland, Jr., MD
Dr. David Weiland is Board Certified in Internal Medicine & currently works with Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care. He is also working as the Director of Palliative Care at Advent Hospital in North Pinellas County. He has significant administrative and quality experience as Chief Medical Officer at HCA/Largo Medical Center for 5 years. He also served as the VPMA of Bayfront Medical Center for four years.

Dr. Weiland was Medical Director of Suncoast Hospice, where he oversaw quality, community outreach and developed inpatient hospice units and hospital-based palliative care teams. In addition, Dr. Weiland has served as Family Practice Faculty for the University of South Florida. He was board certified in Internal Medicine as well as Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Weiland has served on numerous community boards including current Chairman of the Pinellas EMS Advisory Committee and the Pinellas County Commission Pill Mill Task Force dealing with illicit pain medication prescribing. He was the past president of the Pinellas County Medical Association and continues to take an active role in PCMA and FMA activities.

He lectures and presents clinical presentations nationally for the AAFP, including a diverse array of palliative and primary care topics including The Physiological Benefits of Humor, Medical Ethics, Depression, Alzheimer's Disease, Palliative Pain Management, Quality and Patient safety issues as well as conducts workshops on patient-centered communication to enhance the patient care experience.

Athens (Piraeus), Greece

A panoramic view of the ancient Acropolis of Athens, Greece, rising above a lush canopy of green trees. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a premier shore excursion destination for cruise passengers docking in the nearby port of Piraeus.
Athens is a metropolis where the foundations of Western civilization are not merely stored in museums but are woven into the chaotic, vibrant fabric of daily life. As the capital of Greece and a primary Mediterranean embarkation hub, it offers a profound context for the voyage ahead. However, Athens is also a dense, sprawling city that can be overwhelming without a plan. Arriving at least one or two days prior to embarkation is not just a safeguard against flight delays; it is necessary to properly experience a city that requires patience to appreciate fully.
Logistics: Arrival and Accommodation
Upon landing at Athens International Airport (ATH), the journey to the city center takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes. While the Metro (Line 3) is efficient and affordable, it can be crowded. For travelers with cruise luggage, a pre-booked private transfer or a taxi is often the wiser choice to avoid navigating stairs and crowds in the summer heat.
Regarding accommodation, a critical distinction must be made: Piraeus is the port, but Athens is the destination. Piraeus is a bustling industrial hub with limited touristic appeal beyond the harbor itself. To maximize your experience, book a hotel in central Athens—specifically in the Plaka, Monastiraki, or Koukaki neighborhoods. These areas place you within walking distance of the major archaeological sites and the best dining, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city's atmosphere immediately.
Day 1: The Acropolis and The Old City
Your first morning should be dedicated to the Acropolis. The strategy here is simple: go early. Arriving at the entrance by 8:00 AM allows you to ascend the sacred rock before the midday heat and the heaviest crowds arrive. Standing before the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Propylaea offers a humbling perspective on human achievement. The view of the sprawling white city against the Aegean Sea is spectacular.
Descend directly to the Acropolis Museum. This modern architectural gem provides the necessary context for what you have just seen, housing the original Caryatids and the Parthenon Marbles in a space flooded with natural light. It is a masterclass in making ancient history accessible.
Spend your afternoon in the Plaka. While parts of it cater heavily to tourists, it remains the most charming district for aimless wandering. Seek out the Anafiotika neighborhood, a tiny cluster of whitewashed houses built by islanders from Anafi, which feels like a Cycladic village hidden beneath the Acropolis. For dinner, look for rooftop dining in Monastiraki to watch the Parthenon illuminate at dusk—a sight that never loses its power.
Day 2: Democracy, Markets, and Modern Life
Begin your second day at the Ancient Agora. Often less crowded than the Acropolis, this was the actual heart of public life where Socrates taught and democracy was debated. The Temple of Hephaestus here is among the best-preserved Doric temples in Greece.
From the quiet of the Agora, transition to the noise of the Monastiraki Flea Market. It is a sensory overload of antiques, vinyl records, and souvenirs that showcases the city's commercial spirit. A short walk leads to Syntagma Square to witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a ceremony of precision and tradition.
For your final pre-cruise meal, venture into Psiri. This neighborhood has transformed from a working-class district into a hub of nightlife and gastronomy. It offers excellent tavernas serving authentic meze—grilled octopus, fava, and lamb chops—often accompanied by live Rembetika music.
Embarkation Day
On the day of departure, allow ample time to reach the Port of Piraeus. Traffic in Athens is unpredictable. A taxi or private transfer from the city center typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. By arriving in Athens early, you step onto your ship not as a weary traveler rushing from the airport, but as an acclimated explorer, already enriched by the history and culture of this enduring city.

At Sea - Cruising

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is not merely a backdrop; it is a complete, immersive historical experience. The moment you see the formidable stone walls rising from the Adriatic, you understand its acclaim as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic.’ The main cruise port at Gruž is a short bus or taxi ride from the Pile Gate, the primary entrance to the pedestrian-only Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Once inside, the city unfolds along the Stradun, a wide, limestone-paved thoroughfare. While it’s tempting to follow the crowds to landmarks like the Rector’s Palace or the Franciscan Monastery, the real magic lies in exploring the labyrinth of narrow side streets and quiet courtyards. Two experiences, however, are truly essential for a day visit.

First, walk the city walls. We recommend going as early as possible or later in the afternoon to avoid the intense midday sun and the peak crowds that can make the circuit feel congested. The two-kilometer loop provides unparalleled, evolving views of the terracotta rooftops, the shimmering sea, and the nearby islands. Second, take the cable car to the summit of Mount Srđ. The panoramic vista from the top puts the city's magnificent geography into perspective and is unforgettable.

For a more active perspective, a sea kayaking tour offers a unique view of the city's scale from the water. While its recent screen fame is a popular draw, Dubrovnik’s true identity is that of the resilient Republic of Ragusa, a maritime power that has been meticulously restored. It is a world-class destination where strategic timing is the key to fully appreciating its splendor.

Kotor, Montenegro

The arrival into Kotor is an event in itself. The deep, fjord-like Bay of Kotor is a dramatic waterway flanked by steep, dark mountains, and the sail-in provides a stunning introduction to one of the Adriatic's most remarkable destinations. Once ashore, you step directly into the Stari Grad (Old Town), a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonderfully preserved labyrinth of cobblestone lanes, hidden squares, and Venetian-era architecture.

The town is entirely encircled by formidable medieval walls that snake their way up the adjoining mountain. For the physically active, the port's signature experience is the strenuous but rewarding climb up the 1,350 steps to the Fortress of San Giovanni. The panoramic view from the top—looking down on the triangular Old Town, the bay, and the docked ships—is one of the most iconic in the Mediterranean. We recommend tackling this in the morning to avoid the midday sun and crowds.

For those preferring a more relaxed day, the Old Town itself is the main attraction. It’s a place to wander without a fixed agenda. You can visit the 12th-century Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, browse the small shops, and observe the town's famous feline residents. The true pleasure of Kotor lies in finding a quiet piazza, ordering a coffee or a glass of local Vranac wine, and simply absorbing the historic atmosphere. For a change of scenery, a short boat or taxi ride to the impossibly picturesque village of Perast offers a quieter, equally beautiful alternative.

Corfu, Greece

Corfu distinguishes itself from its Cycladic cousins with a lush, green landscape and a cultural identity deeply colored by centuries of Venetian, French, and British influence. This is immediately apparent upon entering its UNESCO-listed Old Town, a captivating labyrinth of narrow, cobbled lanes (kantounia) that open onto elegant squares. The town is anchored by two formidable fortresses: the Old Fortress, perched on a rocky promontory, offers panoramic views and a tangible sense of history, while the New Fortress looms over the old port.

The heart of social life is the Liston, a graceful arcade of cafés modeled on Paris's Rue de Rivoli, facing the vast Spianada square—one of the largest in Europe. It’s the perfect place to pause for a coffee or a local ginger beer (tsitsibira) and observe the rhythm of the city. For a deeper cultural dive, the Church of Saint Spyridon, with its striking bell tower, houses the relics of the island's patron saint.

While the Old Town can easily fill a day, those seeking coastal beauty can venture to Paleokastritsa (a 30-40 minute drive), renowned for its dramatic cliffs and emerald coves. Alternatively, the Achilleion Palace, built for an Austrian empress, provides a glimpse into 19th-century royal life amid beautiful gardens. Corfu offers a rich, layered experience, blending grand European architecture with the warm hospitality and stunning scenery of the Ionian Sea.

Strait of Messina

Stromboli is less a port of call and more a direct encounter with a primal force of nature. As one of the Aeolian Islands, its identity is entirely consumed by its namesake volcano, one of the most active on Earth. For over 2,000 years, it has put on a constant, fiery display, earning it the ancient mariners' title, "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean."

Your experience here is singular: to witness this raw geological power. Many itineraries wisely time their visit for dusk, sailing past the *Sciara del Fuoco* (Stream of Fire), a blackened scar on the mountainside where lava often tumbles into the sea. Seeing incandescent rock arc against the night sky is a truly unforgettable spectacle.

If your ship tenders to shore, you'll find a simple, whitewashed village clinging to the volcano's base and unique black sand beaches. It’s a quiet, starkly beautiful place, but the main event is always the mountain looming above. Set your expectations for a powerful natural encounter, not a bustling island town, and you will be captivated.

Naples, Italy

Naples is a destination that demands a choice: do you dive into the chaotic, vibrant heart of the city, or use it as a strategic launchpad for the world-class treasures surrounding it? As a port of call, Naples offers an embarrassment of riches, but the sheer volume of options requires a disciplined itinerary. The most critical advice we can offer is to resist the urge to do everything; traffic in Campania is notorious, and overpacking your day often leads to stress rather than enjoyment.

For history enthusiasts, the primary draw is the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii remains the headline attraction, offering a sprawling, visceral look at Roman life frozen in time. However, we often direct clients toward the smaller, better-preserved site of Herculaneum. Because it was buried in mud rather than ash, Herculaneum retains multi-story buildings and wooden elements that perished in Pompeii, all within a footprint that is much easier to navigate in a few hours.

If you prefer coastal glamour, the Bay of Naples is your gateway. A high-speed hydrofoil can transport you to the Isle of Capri, famous for the Blue Grotto and high-end boutiques, though be mindful of summer crowds. Alternatively, the cliffside town of Sorrento offers a refined, relaxed atmosphere perfect for a leisurely lunch of fresh seafood and limoncello. While the Amalfi Coast is spectacular, we advise caution when attempting it on a cruise stop; the winding roads are breathtaking but slow, leaving little room for error in your return schedule.

Should you choose to stay in Naples itself, prepare for an experience that is gritty, loud, and profoundly authentic. The historic center, Spaccanapoli, is a UNESCO World Heritage site teeming with baroque churches and hidden courtyards. The National Archaeological Museum is essential viewing, as it houses the actual mosaics and artifacts removed from the excavation sites. Finally, this is the birthplace of pizza. Skipping a meal at a historic pizzeria here would be a missed cultural imperative.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Civitavecchia serves as the maritime gateway to Rome, and it's essential to approach a day here with a clear and realistic plan. The 'Eternal City' is a 60- to 90-minute journey from the port, a commute that requires factoring travel time into your precious hours ashore. The most common and efficient method is the regional train, which connects Civitavecchia's station (a short walk or shuttle from the port) with Rome's key transit hubs. For those seeking more comfort and a direct route to specific sites, pre-booked private transfers are an excellent, albeit more costly, alternative.
With time being the most valuable currency, a successful day in Rome means choosing a focus. Attempting to conquer everything results in a frantic blur. We recommend choosing one of two paths. The first is a deep dive into Ancient Rome: pre-book tickets to explore the staggering scale of the Colosseum, walk through the ruins of the Roman Forum where emperors once stood, and marvel at the architectural genius of the Pantheon. This area is largely walkable and provides a cohesive historical narrative.
Alternatively, focus on the grandeur of Vatican City. Stand in the embrace of Bernini's colonnades in St. Peter's Square and enter the breathtaking St. Peter's Basilica, a monument to faith and art. A visit to the Vatican Museums to see the Sistine Chapel is possible, but requires strict, timed-entry tickets and a significant time commitment that will likely preclude other sightseeing.
Whichever path you choose, build in moments for the simple Roman pleasures that give the city its soul. Find a small piazza, order a quick espresso at a bar, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, or savor a scoop of authentic gelato. For those who prefer to avoid the journey altogether, Civitavecchia itself offers a pleasant waterfront, a bustling market, and the impressive Forte Michelangelo, providing a relaxed, local Italian experience.
