Program Purpose / Objectives
DEVELOPING CULTURAL COMPETENCE IN THE DELIVERY OF HEALTHCARE (20 CH)

PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Research studies have shown that healthcare providers unconsciously stereotype persons based on race, class, physical disability, gender, age, and sexual orientation. These stereotypes influence clinical decision-making, the interpretation of symptoms, and the quality of care given. This program is intended for nurses who seek to deliver quality culturally competent healthcare among diverse ethnic groups. Join us in a discussion and review of how the nurse clinician can enhance their personal ethnic healthcare delivery.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe one's cultural view of the world.
  2. Discuss one's own attitude toward cultural differences.
  3. Delineate different cultural views and practices.
  4. Discuss the changing demographic trends that contribute to the United States' multicultural landscape.
  5. Define the importance of cultural competence when working with patients and families around healthcare issues.
  6. Describe cultural belief systems, values and norms for various sexual orientation, racial, and ethnic minority groups
  7. Discuss culturally sensitive communication strategies when discussing healthcare issues with sexual orientation, racial, and ethnic minority patients and families, including the role of interpreters.
  8. Identify best practice guidelines that reflect ethical cultural competence and sensitivity when working with sexual orientation, racial, and ethnic minority patients and families around issues related to chronic disease management.
Conference Sessions generally take place on days at sea (as itinerary allows), giving you plenty of time to enjoy your meals, evenings and ports of call with your companion, family and friends.

Ports of Call
Adelaide, Australia - The capital city of South Australia is simply enchanting, a treasure trove of shopping, fine arts, gastronomy and outdoor activity. Adelaide is the heart of the world's opal industry, selling gorgeous stones from South Australian mines. Be sure to hike the aptly named Mt. Lofty Ranges and catch a wave off the Fleurieu Peninsula. Indulge your adventurous palate and traipse into nearby wine regions like the famed Barossa Valley to pick up a deliciously drinkable souvenir.
Hobart (Tasmania), Australia - Hobart is Australia's second oldest city and state capital of Tasmania. Home to more than 90 National Trust buildings, Hobart combines colonial character with a metropolitan lifestyle. It is the gateway to Tasmania's other scenic attractions and a range of shore activities lets you experience the best of both worlds.
Melbourne, Australia - Melbourne is a huge, sprawling city with something for everyone ‐ culture, art, fashion, and friendly Australians. It is also Australia's financial and commercial center. Easy to explore, at the heart of the city is the Golden Mile, the city's governmental and business corridor, home to hotels, shops, restaurants and theaters.

Melbourne also offers one of the world's finest parks - the Royal Botanic Gardens. Tour this city's charming Victorian-era architecture and visit the countryside via a vintage steam train.
Sydney, Australia - The whole world's in love with Sydney. It's stylish, it's sophisticated, it's home to some of the friendliest people on the planet. And yes, a few koalas, if you know where to look. What's not to love? This gateway to the Outback has it all: endless outdoor adventure around the harbor or in spots like the Blue Mountains. Golden sandy beaches named Bondi, Bilgola and Coogee (which are not only beautiful, but also fun to say). A bustling art and entertainment scene. Countless museums, galleries and world-class restaurants where the dishes go way beyond the local Vegemite.

Our staff can assist you with all your travel arrangements.

Cruise Line cancellation policies are strictly enforced. For that reason, we urge all of our travelers to carefully consider whether travel insurance is a good value for them.

Certainly, if you have reason to think that "something might come up" that might force you to cancel, travel insurance is worth the cost of the premium. Examples we've seen in the past include ill or frail family members and changes in employment causing relocation.

If travel insurance is the right choice for you, we recommend TravelSafe. To visit their site and explore your options click here or on the link above; this link allows you to price out the insurance plan you prefer. The cruise lines also offer travel insurance and we'd be happy to help you go that route if you'd prefer.
