FAQ

  1. When and where is the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Church Cruise scheduled?
July 19th - 24th, 2025 aboard Royal Caribbean's Cruise ship, the Liberty of the Seas.
  2. Where does the cruise start from and where does it go?
The cruise starts from Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey, and goes to Bermuda and back.
  3. What is the cost of registration?
The cost is $100 per-family. The registration fee is non-refundable except in cases where your visa does not come through.
  4. What is the cost of the cruise?
See the "Cruise Pricing" tab above. Pricing is per-person and based on double occupancy (Two people in a room)
  5. What is included and what is NOT included?
    The cruise includes:
    • 5 Nights of accommodation
    • All meals during the entire cruise, as well as a buffet
    • Onboard entertainment on the ship
    • Some dishes prepared in North Indian and Kerala style
    • Coffee, tea, and juice
    The cruise does NOT include:
    • Alcohol or other special beverages
    • Bermuda on-shore excursions
    • Wi-Fi connection
  6. How do I book?
You may click the "Request A Quote" tab above and fill out the registration form. An agent at Continuing Education will contact you with further information to assist you.
  7. When should I book?
The earlier you book, the better. The contract we has with the cruise line over 100 rooms of various categories. Once those rooms are booked, the current market rate at time of booking will apply. (This will likely be higher than the contracted rates!)
  8. When is the latest I can book?
While you could potentially book as soon as a week prior to sailing, it is strongly recommended to book prior to March 21st, 2025, since after that date the contracted group price for this cruise will expire, and there may not be any available staterooms at all.
  9. What is the required deposit to be paid at the time of booking?
The deposit is $100 per-person (a minimum of $200 per booking).
  10. When is the rest of the cruise payment due?
The remainder of the payment is due no later than April 14th, 2025.
  11. What if I see a SALE price for this cruise that is lower than what I paid?
You may contact the cruise agency while the sale is ongoing and they will work with the cruise operators to match that price. This only applies before final payment is due (April 14th, 2025) and only as long as you are not booked with a special non-refundable fare (Which would be outside the group allotment). Note that this is a request to the cruise line, and is not guaranteed in all cases.
  12. What happens if I have to cancel?
Groups/individuals may be cancelled prior to April 14th, 2025 with no penalties (Unless you have booked with a special non-refundable fare, which would be outside the group allotment)
    • After April 14th, you will incur a penalty of 25% of the total fare. (Meaning you get 75% of your money back)
    • After May 6th, the penalty increases to 50% of total fare.
    • After May 20th, the penalty increases to 75% of total fare.
    • After June 19th, you will not receive any refund except for the taxes and fees you paid.
  13. Do I need to purchase cruise insurance?
Travel insurance is not required, but is recommended. University at Sea will be happy to book travel insurance, but unfortunately this service is only offered for US citizens. Non-US citizens will have to purchase their own travel insurance.
  14. What time do I need to be at the port on sailing day?
Boarding time is 12-3pm on July 19th, 2025. You must be at the port by at least 12:00 Noon.
  15. Do I need a passport?
Yes, you must have a valid passport with an expiry date more than 6 months after the date of travel. So your passport must expire AFTER January 25th, 2026!
  16. When should I apply for a USA visit visa?
You should apply for the visa ASAP. Your initial interview date may be further out initially, but you may get an earlier interview date since the US embassies are in the process of providing faster service per a USA Government report. You may also expedite the Visa processing by applying in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, etc. The various consulates in India have different wait times as well, so please research that before applying.
  17. How do I get the letter of invitation for the Visa, and can I get it without booking a cabin?
We do require you hold a cabin before we issue letters of invitation, but you can cancel your cabin prior to the penalty period if your visa is not approved for any reason.
  18. Where can I stay when I arrive the day before sailing?
The Cruise agency can recommend and book you a hotel. This will be booked separately and paid by each participant depending on his/her needs. When registering for this course, you will have the option of requesting hotel recommendations.
  19. Which airport should I fly to?
The closest airport to the cruise terminal is Newark, New Jersey (Airport Code EWR). It is 10 miles from the Cruise Terminal. Other options, which are further, include JFK and LGA in New York. The cruise terminal is the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, NJ. In any case, transfers are available, and the travel agent can handle that for you when you are booking for an additional cost. You will want to come in at least 1 or 2 days before the start of the cruise regardless of which airport you use. The agent can assist you with hotel, transfers to hotel, and transfers to the port (cost not included).
  20. How do I get from the hotel to the Cruise Terminal/Sea Port?
Most hotels will have transport vehicles to the cruise terminal. If the hotel does not offer transit to the cruise terminal, the agency will arrange the transportation for you at an additional cost. You can also take a Taxi/Uber if you prefer.
  21. Can I stay there after the cruise?
Yes. The cruise agency can assist with this. Hotel and transport bookings will have to be separately booked and paid by each participant depending on his/her needs.
  22. Do I need a visa for Bermuda?
Indian Nationals holding a valid MRV (Multi Re-Entry Visa for US, UK, or Canada) can now visit Bermuda without requiring any separate visa for Bermuda or visa waiver. The MRV for the UK, US or Canada must be valid for 45 days after the end of your stay. Please keep in mind that while a visa is not required, your passport must be valid for six months after the day you exit the country and have one blank visa page. You should also keep proof of your return flights.
  23. Will we be the only passengers aboard the ship?
No, the cruise ship can accommodate over 4,000 passengers.
  24. What to bring on the cruise?
Pack like you would for any resort. Cruise vacations are casual by day, whether you're on the ship or on shore. In the evening, the dress code can vary. Cruises usually have one "Formal night", though you can opt out of it by dining at the buffet if you wish. Attire is dictated by occasion.
  25. What is NOT allowed to bring on the cruise?
    • No hair dryers
    • No steamers or irons
    • No hot plates
    • No knives or scissors
    • No weapons
    • No hookahs
    • No extension cords
    • No perishable foods
    • No more than two bottles of wine or champagne per cabin. No beer, liquor, or boxed wine.
  26. What type of cabin should I book?
It depends on your needs and budget. Balcony staterooms are the most popular, and are recommended by the cruise agency because they allow you the ability to get fresh air. Ocean View staterooms have a window, but no balcony. These are cheaper than balcony staterooms, and are a good "sweet spot" for those looking to save some money but still have access to natural light. There are also inside staterooms, which are the cheapest and have no window, and Junior Suites, which are like balcony staterooms but more spacious.
  27. How many people go in a cabin?
Most cabins in our group allotment are for two passengers. While it is possible to have three or four people in a room, it can be quite cramped. It is strongly recommended to have only two people per room, since that is what they are designed to accommodate, and booking a triple/quad can increase the price substantially, so it may not even be cheaper than booking multiple double rooms.
  28. Is there a gymnasium on the ship?
Yes. It is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and offers guests a fully-equipped fitness center with free weights, machines, treadmills and ellipticals. In the locker room, there is also a sauna and steam room.
  29. Is there a casino on the ship?
Yes. Featuring around 300 slot machines and 20 gaming tables, it offers Video Poker, Blackjack, Craps, Roulette and Caribbean Stud Poker. Guests using the casino can pay either with cash or using their Sea Pass card.
  30. Does the ship have Wi-Fi?
Yes, the fee is approximately $21 per-device, per-day.
  31. Does the ship have aerobic, yoga, and other classes?
Yes, classes are available. Some are complimentary, and some charge a fee.
  32. Will St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Church Cruise attendees have a dedicated area in the dining room for lunch and dinner?
Yes, all attendees of this group will be sitting in the same section of the dining room.
  33. What can I do if I get seasick (motion sickness)?
Modern cruises manage to avoid excessive motion by navigating around harsh weather, using high-tech stabilizers, and choosing itineraries with calm water. Plus, the large size of modern cruise ships minimizes the rocking effect. However, if you do get motion sickness, you will likely be able to obtain a patch or pills onboard which will minimize the symptoms. Still, it is recommended that you bring your own medications, just in case.
  34. Are there medical services on the ship?
Yes, every cruise ship has a well-equipped medical facility and staff to handle most onboard health issues.
  35. Can I get accommodations for a special diet?
Most ships can accommodate salt-free, low-carb, Kosher, vegetarian, or other preferences, However, this request must be made in advance, so be sure to ask your travel agent about this. See Royal Caribbean Dietary Restrictions Info.
  36. Will I be charged a fee for using my credit or debit card for booking?
The agency or cruise line will not charge you any fees, however we cannot guarantee that your bank will not impose its own fee, depending on the type of card, the bank, etc. Please check with your bank before you book to be sure.
  37. Why can't I do the booking through Royal Caribbean directly?
Booking as a group allows the travel agency to get us our group amenities, such as the meeting space, dedicated dining area, and more. The agency also handles all the registration process for you with dedicated staff. The rates offered by Continuing Education, Inc. will always be as good or better than a legitimate rate offered directly by the cruise line, though they may appear higher on the website due to including taxes and port fees, which Royal Caribbean's website doesn't add until the end of the booking process.

PORTS OF CALL

Cape Liberty, NJ (New York, NY)

Your cruise documents will say Cape Liberty, New Jersey, but let's be perfectly honest: the true destination here is New York City. Sailing from this port without dedicating a few days to the city that never sleeps is like visiting a grand library and only reading the table of contents. As your travel advisors, we consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Manhattan not just an option, but an essential part of the experience. It transforms your vacation from a wonderful sea voyage into an unforgettable land-and-sea journey.

Think of your cruise as the main event and a New York stay as the perfect overture or grand finale. The key is planning, and that begins with the simple logistics of getting from your ship in New Jersey into the heart of Manhattan. A ride-share or pre-booked car service is the most direct route, typically a 30-45 minute journey outside of peak traffic, offering your first thrilling glimpses of the skyline. For those flying in, the port’s proximity to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is a significant convenience, making the transition from air to land seamless.

**Crafting Your New York Itinerary: A Two- or Three-Day Primer**

With a city this vast, the goal isn't to see everything, but to experience the best of it at a pace that energizes rather than exhausts. We recommend focusing on one or two neighborhoods per day.

**Day 1: The Iconic Core & Theatrical Heights**

Start in Midtown, the city’s vibrant, beating heart. This is where you’ll find the landmarks of your imagination. Begin at Rockefeller Center; we prefer the Top of the Rock observation deck over the Empire State Building for its staggered viewing platforms and unparalleled views *of* the Empire State Building itself. From there, it’s a short walk to the magnificent St. Patrick's Cathedral and the architectural splendor of Grand Central Terminal—be sure to look up at the celestial ceiling.

Yes, you must see Times Square, but our advice is to treat it like a force of nature: witness its dazzling, chaotic energy for fifteen minutes, then strategically retreat. As evening approaches, the Theater District comes alive. A pre-theater dinner in Hell’s Kitchen offers a world of culinary options, from authentic Thai to rustic Italian, just steps from Broadway. Securing tickets to a show in advance is always wise, but for the spontaneous, the TKTS booth in Times Square offers same-day discounts. Seeing a Broadway production is a quintessential New York experience that never fails to deliver.

**Day 2: History, Remembrance, and Neighborhood Charm**

Head downtown to immerse yourself in the city’s history. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is a profoundly moving and essential experience. We strongly advise booking timed-entry tickets online well in advance. The quiet reverence of the memorial pools, set in the footprints of the Twin Towers, is a powerful moment of reflection. Nearby, One World Observatory provides a breathtaking, panoramic perspective of the city and its waterways.

From there, explore the Financial District’s narrow streets, walking past the New York Stock Exchange and Trinity Church. Then, shift gears by wandering into the West Village. This is a different New York entirely—a charming labyrinth of brownstones, leafy streets, and unique boutiques. Sit by the fountain in Washington Square Park, watch the chess players, and soak in the neighborhood’s bohemian spirit. For dinner, the Village offers an abundance of intimate, high-quality restaurants perfect for recounting the day's discoveries.

**Day 3: Art, Nature, and a Bridge with a View**

Dedicate your final day to the intersection of culture and nature. Head to the Upper East Side’s Museum Mile. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a world unto itself; our strategy is to pick two or three exhibits that genuinely interest you—perhaps the Egyptian Temple of Dendur or the European Paintings—and explore them deeply rather than attempting a marathon. For modern art lovers, the Guggenheim’s iconic spiral building is as much a masterpiece as the collection within.

In the afternoon, escape into the curated wilderness of Central Park. Rent a rowboat on The Lake, stroll through the literary walk at The Mall, or find a quiet bench in the Shakespeare Garden. The park is the city’s collective backyard, a perfect place to decompress. For a truly memorable final act, take the subway to Brooklyn. Walk back towards Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge as the sun begins to set. The view of the skyline lighting up is, without exaggeration, one of the greatest cityscapes in the world and the perfect image to carry with you as you begin or end your cruise.

By investing a few days, you’re not just adding a city to your trip; you’re giving yourself the gift of context, culture, and energy that will enrich your entire vacation. It’s the savvy way to travel, and it ensures you get the absolute most out of your well-deserved time away.

At Sea - Cruising

Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda

The Royal Naval Dockyard is a destination in its own right, a sprawling 19th-century naval fortress repurposed as Bermuda's primary cruise port. While its stone walls contain a number of attractions, its true value is as an efficient and scenic gateway to the rest of the island.

Within the Dockyard's immediate, walkable vicinity, the main highlight is the National Museum of Bermuda. Housed within the formidable Keep, it offers a comprehensive look at the island's maritime legacy, with the restored Commissioner's House providing panoramic ocean views. For a taste of local creativity, observe glassblowers at the Dockyard Glassworks or browse authentic goods at the Bermuda Craft Market. The historic Frog & Onion Pub, set in an 18th-century cooperage, offers a convenient spot for a meal.

To experience Bermuda's iconic pink-sand beaches, you must venture beyond the Dockyard. The island's excellent public transportation makes this straightforward. The fast ferry is the most scenic and popular option, offering direct service to the capital city of Hamilton—ideal for exploring Front Street's shops and restaurants—and a longer, picturesque route to the UNESCO World Heritage site of St. George's. For the famous South Shore beaches, including the world-renowned Horseshoe Bay, public buses and shuttles provide regular service from the Dockyard's transportation hub. Taxis are also readily available.

Consider the Dockyard your well-equipped basecamp for a day of island exploration. Its historical significance is genuine, but the celebrated landscapes of Bermuda await just a short ferry or bus ride away.

Why Protect your Trip?

Whether you’re planning your next trip or you recently booked one, travel insurance can help smooth over many unexpected travel glitches—while putting your mind at ease, knowing you’re off the hook for covered expenses that could arise from them.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can provide you benefits and professional support when a covered situation comes up before or during your trip. The following examples may qualify for benefits:

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen
  • Missing your cruise departure after a covered flight delay

You also can contact our travel protection partner Allianz Global Assistance’s 24/7, award-winning customer service for on-the-go assistance with issues like a medical emergency, replacing your lost passport, or making reservations around the world. To be eligible for a time-sensitive waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusions, purchase your travel insurance plan within 14 days of initial trip deposit (other purchase requirements and conditions apply). Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.

24-HOUR ASSISTANCE

Provides around-the-clock support during your trip. Allianz Global Assistance’s staff of multilingual problem solvers can help you with medical, legal, and travel-related emergencies whenever they happen. Medical assistance may include, but is not limited to:

  • Medical triage with referrals to local prescreened medical providers
  • Ongoing medical monitoring
  • Payment guarantee
  • Emergency medical transportation

Additional services for travel-related emergencies can help with:

  • Missed connecting flights
  • Lost/stolen travel documents
