PORTS OF CALL

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Your Mediterranean voyage commences from Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, but the true overture to your adventure begins in the heart of the Eternal City itself. As dedicated professionals, you spend your days in structured, high-stakes environments. Rome offers the perfect antidote: a city where millennia of history, art, and culture converge in a vibrant, unscripted symphony of life. We strongly encourage you to arrive one or two days prior to embarkation, allowing you to decompress, acclimate to the time zone, and immerse yourself in a world far removed from your daily practice before your onboard conferences begin.

**Arriving and Settling In**

Upon landing at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you have several efficient options to reach the city center. The Leonardo Express train provides a direct, 32-minute journey to Termini Station, the city's main transport hub. Alternatively, licensed white city taxis offer a fixed fare to destinations within the Aurelian Walls. Securing a hotel in a central, walkable neighborhood like the area around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, or the charmingly bohemian Trastevere will place the city’s treasures at your doorstep.

**A Suggested 48-Hour Roman Prelude**

**Day 1: Imperial Grandeur and the Art of Living**

Begin your first day by stepping back two thousand years. Pre-booked tickets are essential to bypass the long queues at the **Colosseum**, the iconic amphitheater that once hosted gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. From there, walk over to the **Roman Forum** and **Palatine Hill**, the sprawling nerve center of the ancient empire. Standing amidst these evocative ruins, you can almost hear the echoes of senators debating and chariots rattling on stone roads. It’s a powerful, humbling experience that puts the passage of time into perspective.

For lunch, escape the crowds and wander into the nearby Monti district, a fashionable neighborhood of artisans and ivy-clad buildings, to find a traditional trattoria for a plate of *cacio e pepe*. In the afternoon, embrace the Italian concept of *la dolce vita* (the sweet life). Cross the Tiber River into **Trastevere**, a picturesque labyrinth of cobblestone streets and ochre-colored buildings. Spend hours simply wandering, discovering hidden courtyards, boutique shops, and lively piazzas. As evening descends, find an outdoor table for an *aperitivo*—a pre-dinner drink with snacks—and watch the world go by. This is Rome at its most authentic and relaxing.

**Day 2: Divine Art and Baroque Splendor**

Dedicate your morning to the world’s smallest sovereign state, **Vatican City**. Again, pre-booking is non-negotiable. The **Vatican Museums** house one of the greatest art collections on earth, a journey through centuries of human creativity that culminates in the breathtaking **Sistine Chapel**. Seeing Michelangelo’s ceiling and *The Last Judgment* in person is a profound cultural moment. Afterward, step into the immense and awe-inspiring **St. Peter's Basilica**, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.

In the afternoon, enjoy a more leisurely exploration of Rome’s historic center. Visit the **Pantheon**, an architectural marvel with its staggering unsupported dome and oculus open to the heavens. From there, it’s a short stroll to **Piazza Navona**, a stunning showcase of Baroque art and architecture, dominated by Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers. No pre-cruise stay is complete without a visit to the **Trevi Fountain**. Toss a coin over your shoulder to ensure your return to Rome, and perhaps indulge in a scoop of artisanal gelato from a nearby shop. This is the perfect, relaxed conclusion to your city immersion.

**The Journey to Your Ship**

On embarkation day, you can travel from Rome to the port of Civitavecchia with ease. A direct train from Termini Station is an efficient and scenic option, or you can arrange for a pre-booked private transfer for ultimate convenience. By arriving early, you transform this travel day from a stressful rush into a calm, simple transition from your Roman holiday to your Mediterranean cruise. You’ll board your ship not with the fatigue of a transatlantic flight, but with the enrichment of a city that has captivated travelers for centuries.

Amalfi, Italy

Taormina, Italy

Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea, Taormina is one of Sicily’s most enchanting destinations. Cruise ships typically anchor in the bay of Giardini Naxos below, with the main town accessible via a scenic cable car, bus, or taxi ride up the hillside—a short, essential journey to the heart of the experience.

The undisputed highlight is the Teatro Antico, a magnificent Greco-Roman amphitheater. While its origins are Greek, the Romans expanded it into the brick-and-marble structure seen today. Its remarkable preservation is secondary only to its location; the stage is perfectly framed by the sea and the often snow-capped, smoking peak of Mount Etna in the distance. It remains an active venue, and simply sitting on the ancient stone tiers is a memorable experience.

From the theater, the main pedestrian thoroughfare, Corso Umberto, invites a classic Italian *passeggiata*. Lined with chic boutiques, artisan shops, and cafes, it’s the town’s vibrant artery. For the best views, find your way to Piazza IX Aprile, a stunning terrace with checkered black-and-white tiles that serves as Taormina’s main square. It’s the ideal spot for a coffee or an aperitivo while soaking in the panoramic coastal views. For a moment of tranquility, the Villa Comunale public gardens offer a lush, shaded escape with unique Victorian follies and more spectacular vistas.

A visit isn’t complete without sampling a quintessential Sicilian treat. Seek out a local pasticceria for a fresh cannolo or a refreshing almond granita with brioche—a local breakfast staple that’s perfect any time of day.

Valletta, Malta

Sailing into Valletta’s Grand Harbour is one of the most dramatic arrivals in the Mediterranean. You are immediately enveloped by immense, honey-colored limestone fortifications rising from the sea—a fitting introduction to a city built by the Knights of St. John that is itself a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city is a compact, walkable grid, making it ideal for a day of exploration. The primary destination for most is St. John's Co-Cathedral. Its austere façade belies a jaw-dropping interior of High Baroque opulence, with every surface covered in intricate carvings, gold leaf, and marble. The cathedral’s true masterpiece is Caravaggio’s monumental painting, “The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist,” a profoundly moving work that is worth the visit alone.

For the best views, head to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, which offer a stunning panorama of the Grand Harbour and the historic Three Cities across the water. Time your visit for the daily cannon firing from the Saluting Battery below. Beyond the major sites, the real joy of Valletta is in wandering its streets, admiring the traditional enclosed wooden balconies (*gallariji*), and perhaps stopping for a *pastizz*—a flaky, savory pastry filled with ricotta or peas.

For those seeking a quieter, medieval atmosphere, a taxi ride to the fortified city of Mdina is a worthwhile alternative. Known as the “Silent City,” its labyrinthine alleys and noble palaces offer a peaceful contrast to the energy of the capital.

At Sea - Cruising

Argostoli, Greece

Tirana (Durres), Albania

Kotor, Montenegro

The arrival into Kotor is an event in itself. The deep, fjord-like Bay of Kotor is a dramatic waterway flanked by steep, dark mountains, and the sail-in provides a stunning introduction to one of the Adriatic's most remarkable destinations. Once ashore, you step directly into the Stari Grad (Old Town), a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonderfully preserved labyrinth of cobblestone lanes, hidden squares, and Venetian-era architecture.

The town is entirely encircled by formidable medieval walls that snake their way up the adjoining mountain. For the physically active, the port's signature experience is the strenuous but rewarding climb up the 1,350 steps to the Fortress of San Giovanni. The panoramic view from the top—looking down on the triangular Old Town, the bay, and the docked ships—is one of the most iconic in the Mediterranean. We recommend tackling this in the morning to avoid the midday sun and crowds.

For those preferring a more relaxed day, the Old Town itself is the main attraction. It’s a place to wander without a fixed agenda. You can visit the 12th-century Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, browse the small shops, and observe the town's famous feline residents. The true pleasure of Kotor lies in finding a quiet piazza, ordering a coffee or a glass of local Vranac wine, and simply absorbing the historic atmosphere. For a change of scenery, a short boat or taxi ride to the impossibly picturesque village of Perast offers a quieter, equally beautiful alternative.

Split, Croatia

Split offers a remarkable fusion of ancient history and vibrant modern life, centered almost entirely within the walls of a Roman emperor's palace. The cruise port's prime location allows for an immediate and immersive experience; a short walk brings you to the Bronze Gate, the waterfront entrance to Diocletian's Palace. This is no sterile ruin, but the living, breathing heart of the city, where millennia-old limestone is worn smooth by the footfalls of residents and visitors alike.

The palace's central square, the Peristyle, serves as a stunning open-air stage, flanked by the imposing Cathedral of Saint Domnius—originally Diocletian's mausoleum. A climb up its bell tower is highly recommended for breathtaking views over the terracotta roofs and the brilliant blue of the Adriatic. Below ground, explore the vast, vaulted substructures that once supported the emperor's private apartments, now often hosting markets and exhibitions.

Beyond the palace walls, the Riva promenade is the city's social artery, a wide boulevard lined with cafes perfect for people-watching over a coffee or a glass of local wine. For a taste of authentic commerce, the bustling Green Market (Pazar) offers fresh produce and regional crafts just outside the Silver Gate. Split’s core is compact and best explored by simply wandering its labyrinthine alleys, discovering hidden courtyards and soaking in an atmosphere that is both monumental and intimately human. It is an ideal port for independent exploration on foot.
