PORTS OF CALL
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Often viewed merely as a convenient departure point, Fort Lauderdale is a destination that quietly rewards those who choose to linger. To treat it as just a logistical necessity is to miss the essence of a city that has gracefully matured from a spring break capital into a sophisticated, yet relaxed, coastal hub. Adding a day or two before or after your voyage allows you to decompress and discover the city’s true character, which is defined not just by its famous beach, but by the 165 miles of navigable waterways that have earned it the nickname, “The Venice of America.”
This is not an overstatement; water is the city’s lifeblood. The best way to understand Fort Lauderdale’s layout and soul is from the deck of the Water Taxi. Far more than mere transportation, it’s a floating, hop-on-hop-off tour that glides along the Intracoastal Waterway. From this vantage point, you’ll see the city unfold: stunning waterfront mansions, sleek mega-yachts, and lush mangrove-lined shores. It’s a captivating introduction that connects the city’s key districts, from the lively downtown to the elegant beachfront.
At the heart of the city’s social and cultural life is Las Olas Boulevard. This beautifully landscaped thoroughfare is lined with independent boutiques, captivating art galleries, and a diverse array of restaurants. It’s an eminently walkable street, perfect for an afternoon of browsing or an evening of al fresco dining. The atmosphere is polished but unpretentious, inviting you to explore at your own pace. Here, you can find everything from contemporary art to fine jewelry, followed by dinner at a bustling Italian trattoria or a quiet table at a modern American bistro.
Of course, there is the beach. Fort Lauderdale Beach is a magnificent stretch of pale sand and turquoise water, meticulously maintained and framed by a serpentine white wave wall. The beachfront promenade is ideal for a morning walk or bike ride, and the beach itself is wide enough that you can always find a peaceful spot. It possesses a more relaxed and grown-up ambiance than its southern neighbors, attracting families and professionals seeking sun and serenity.
Beyond the sun and sand, Fort Lauderdale offers accessible cultural experiences that provide a deeper sense of place. The Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is an absolute treasure. This historic 35-acre estate, once the winter retreat of artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett, feels like a secret garden frozen in time. You can tour the whimsical home, filled with the couple’s art and collections, and wander through lush grounds that include a desert garden, a hibiscus garden, and native barrier island habitat. It’s a tranquil escape that reveals the charm of Old Florida.
For art enthusiasts, the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale features a notable collection of American and European modern art, with a particular strength in Latin American works and the largest collection of pieces by the American impressionist William Glackens. It’s a manageable and rewarding museum experience, perfect for a few hours of quiet contemplation.
**An Unhurried Pre-Cruise Itinerary**
Arriving a couple of days early transforms the start of your vacation from a travel day into a seamless extension of your holiday. This pace allows for discovery without exhaustion.
**Day 1: Arrival & Waterway Immersion**
* **Afternoon:** After arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), a short ride-share or taxi will take you to your hotel. Settle in, then head for a waterfront lunch. A restaurant like Coconuts offers classic Intracoastal views and immediately sets a relaxed, nautical tone.
* **Late Afternoon:** Purchase an all-day pass for the Water Taxi. Don’t worry about a destination just yet; simply ride the main loop. It’s the perfect orientation, allowing you to appreciate the city’s unique geography and stunning architecture from the water.
* **Evening:** Hop off the Water Taxi at the Las Olas Boulevard stop. Enjoy a leisurely stroll, browse the shops, and select a restaurant for dinner. The boulevard is beautifully lit at night, creating a wonderful, festive atmosphere.
**Day 2: Culture, Coast & Relaxation**
* **Morning:** Take a short ride to the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. Allow at least two to three hours to fully explore the quirky house and the serene, sprawling grounds. It’s a peaceful and utterly unique Florida experience.
* **Lunch:** Head toward the beach and find a casual café along A1A for a light lunch with an ocean breeze.
* **Afternoon:** Dedicate the afternoon to the beach. Whether you choose to walk the promenade, rent a lounge chair and umbrella, or take a dip in the Atlantic, this is your time to unwind completely before your cruise.
* **Evening:** For your final dinner, consider returning to a spot you noted on your Water Taxi tour or trying a different style of cuisine along Las Olas. The options are plentiful, from fresh seafood to global flavors.
**Embarkation Day**
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast. With Port Everglades just a few minutes away, there is no need to rush. A short, stress-free transfer to the port will have you boarding your ship feeling refreshed, acclimated, and already steeped in the vacation mindset.
Nassau, Bahamas
Nassau is a bustling hub, and your best day here requires a plan to navigate beyond the immediate, often-crowded port area. While it has its share of tourist traps, genuine Bahamian character is well within reach for those who know where to look.
For a dose of history, a short walk leads to the Queen's Staircase, a remarkable 66-step passage carved from solid limestone by enslaved people in the 18th century. It ascends to Fort Fincastle, which offers commanding views of the island. For a more refined local taste, the John Watling's Distillery on the historic Buena Vista Estate offers tours and tastings in a setting far removed from the downtown hustle.
If a classic beach day is your priority, we advise looking beyond the nearest options. A taxi to the quieter sands of Cable Beach or, for a more curated experience, a day pass to one of the major resorts on Paradise Island will provide the tranquil, turquoise-water escape you envision. These passes grant access to pristine private beaches and high-quality amenities, turning a potentially hectic port day into a truly relaxing one.
For the most authentic local flavor, take a taxi to Arawak Cay (known as 'The Fish Fry'). This is where Bahamians go for fresh conch salad, fried snapper, and a vibrant, casual atmosphere. It’s a world away from the port-side buffets and offers a true taste of the islands.
At Sea - Cruising
Falmouth, Jamaica
Falmouth offers a tale of two distinct experiences. The purpose-built cruise port is a modern, clean, and secure village of shops and cafes—a comfortable and familiar starting point. Just beyond its gates lies the authentic, historic town of Falmouth, which boasts some of the Caribbean's best-preserved Georgian architecture. While historically significant, the town can feel intense for independent explorers; we find a guided walking tour is the best way to appreciate its rich past without feeling overwhelmed.
Frankly, Falmouth's greatest strength is its strategic location as a launchpad for Jamaica's iconic North Coast adventures. This is your best port for the classic bamboo raft trip down the gentle Martha Brae River—a truly serene experience just minutes away. It also provides excellent access to the lush Good Hope Estate for zip-lining and river tubing, or for the bucket-list climb up the world-famous Dunn's River Falls. Our advice is to view Falmouth not as the primary destination, but as your well-organized gateway to the quintessential Jamaican experiences you've been dreaming of.
Labadee, Haiti
Labadee is a private coastal peninsula offering a meticulously managed day of sun and adventure. The setting is undeniably beautiful, with lush, green hillsides meeting turquoise water. You can choose your pace: relax on the sands of Columbus Cove, or seek out the thrills of Adrenaline Beach. The main attractions are purpose-built, including the Dragon’s Breath Zipline, which offers spectacular views as you soar over the bay, and a unique alpine coaster that winds through the tropical vegetation. While there are artisan markets with local crafts, it's important to set expectations: this is a self-contained resort experience. It provides a secure and scenic beach day but does not offer access to or an authentic cultural immersion into the rest of Haiti.
