Program Purpose / Objectives
  1. The Evolution of Cervical Cancer Screening.
    • The Health Care Provider will understand the development of modern day Cervical Cancer Screening, the role of HPV in male and female lower genital tract, Oropharyngeal, Anal Carcinogenesis, and the importance of promoting HPV vaccination.
  2. Non-Hormonal Treatment of Menopausal Symptoms.
    • The clinician will be better prepared to address the concerns of Perimenopausal Women including their complains of Mood Disturbance, Vasomotor Symptoms, Insomnia, Diminish Sexual Desire, Vaginal Atrophy. He/She will be able to offer patients a variety of Behavioral, Hormonal, Nonhormonal Therapeutic Modalities during this Perimenopausal window.
  3. The Adnexal Mass: Benign or Malignant?
    • The provider will understand the new model of Ovarian Carcinogenesis and the obstacles encountered in trying to develop Ovarian Cancer Screening. The provider will be able to assess the malignant potential of a palpable mass in a woman using present day imaging and Ovarian Tumor Markers and direct appropriate conservative, medical or surgical intervention.
  4. Evaluation of the Incontinent Female Patient.
    • Attendees will be better able to differentiate among the types of Female Urinary Incontinence and provide appropriate counseling on causes and treatment options available including Behavioral Modification, Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation, Drug Therapy and Urogynecological / Neurological referral.
  5. Non-Surgical Treatment of the Patient with Genital Prolapse.
    • Upon the conclusion of this discussion the provider will be familiar with the symptoms associated with Female Pelvic Floor Disorders, the proper evaluation and terminology of Female Genital Prolapse and be able to direct Non-Surgical treatment including use of Vagina Support Devises (pessaries) or make appropriate Urogynecological referral.
  6. Vulvar Pruritis and Vulvar Pain Disorders.
    • Participant will better understand the variety of Infectious, Inflammatory, Neoplastic, Neurologic Disorders that cause Vulvar burning and Pruritis and make timely decisions on proper treatment and need for biopsy.
  7. Addressing Female Sexual Concerns.
    • After participation in this session the Health Care Provider will be more confident in his or her ability to have open discussion with patients over problems of sexual nature, define the type of sexual dysfunction and offer behavioral, pharmacologic or referral to Sex Therapist.

Faculty
Monica Broome, MD, FACP, FAACH
Dr. Monica Broome is the Director of the new Communication Skills Program for University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Her interest is in physician patient communication. The scope of this program includes the undergraduate, graduate, and faculty development levels.

Dr. Broome, formerly Dr. Harris, is an alumnus on the University Of Miami School Of Medicine. Her specialty is Internal Medicine for which she has received recognition and accolades from colleagues and patients, including a service award from the State of Virginia Department of Disabled American Veterans. She was the Founder and former Medical Director of the Women's Veterans Comprehensive Health Program, in Hampton Virginia. Dr. Broome was selected as one of the representatives from the state of Florida to participate in a National Summit on Women's Veterans Health Issues at the White House which resulted in a position paper for Congress. To continue her interest in promoting women's health, Dr. Broome currently serves on the Institutes for Women's Health Education/Academic Training Subcommittee at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Academy of Communication in Healthcare, and a certified faculty member and Master Trainer for the Institute for Healthcare Communication.

Dr. Broome completed a three year fellowship under the Director of Education Development in the Department of Medical Education, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. During her fellowship she completed programs in the Macy Institute for Health Communication Curriculum Development and is certified faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Communication. Her scholarly work includes presentations and workshops nationally for the Association of American Medical Colleges, Society of General Internal Medicine, Southern Group on Educational Affairs, and MGMA Medical Group Management Association; and internationally for the European Association for Communication in Health Care and International Conference on Communication in Healthcare. She serves on the American College of Physicians Legislative Action Program for Health Care Reform, the Editorial Board of Medical Encounter, and Chaired the Committee on Communication and technology for the 2006 American Academy on Communication in Healthcare Annual Research and Teaching Forum. Dr. Broome co-chaired the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare held in the USA in Miami, October 2009. In 2014, the European Association on Communication in Healthcare selected her to be Deputy National Representative for the US.

Frank B. Marsalisi, MD, FACOG
Director of Gynecology and Pelvic Floor Disorders, OB/GYN Residency Program, Bayfront Health, St. Petersburg, Florida.

Dr. Frank Marsalisi is the Director of Gynecology and Pelvic Floor Disorders at the Bayfront Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program in St. Petersburg, Florida. Originally from New York, he preceded his medical degree from Michigan State with two years of hypersensitivity diseases research. After completing his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of South Florida, he went on to fulfill his four-year commitment with the National health Service Corp as Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Ruskin Migrant Community Health Center in Ruskin, Florida. While at Ruskin, he was made a Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida.

Throughout his residency training and postgraduate career, Dr. Marsalisi has been the recipient of many prestigious university and national teaching awards, including the University of South Florida's Distinguished Professor Award and the John Turlich Medical Student Teaching Award, the Council on Resident Education in Ob/Gyn National Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Bayfront Health's Teaching Faculty of the Year award for several consecutive years. He has been a speaker on women's health issues for University at Sea since 2012, and he has been honored as being one of the “Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists in America” by the Consumer Research Council of America. He is a medical community leader on the Board of the Pinellas County Medical Association and is a Pinellas county delegate to the Florida Medical Association.
