Dr. Stephen P. Stone is professor and Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Dermatology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois.
Dr. Stone graduated from Tufts University, and received his medical training at New York University School of Medicine. After serving with the U.S. Navy, he completed a residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Stone then moved to Springfield, Illinois where he maintained a private practice for more than two decades before moving to his current university position.
He has received numerous honors and citations throughout his distinguished career including Honorary Membership in the AAD, selection for" Best Doctors in America", "Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care" and "Who's Who in America'. He is past Editor-in-Chief of Dialogues in Dermatology, the AAD's monthly audio journal and served as the 67th president of the Academy from March 2006 through February 2007.
His interests in dermatology include psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases, acne, occupational dermatology, and skin cancer. He has been involved as an investigator or subinvestigator in more than 40 clinical studies, more than half involving treatment of psoriasis.
Dr. Stone has given more than 220 lectures and Grand Rounds presentations outside of his university, including such international venues as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Guangzhou, China, the Icelandic Dermatology Association, in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Congresso da Sociedade Brasileira Dermatologia, Curitiba and Salvador, Brazil, the Philippine Dermatological Society Annual Meeting in Manila, Republic of the Philippines, the Canadian Dermatological Association, Dermatrends III in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Hong Kong, the International Congress of Dermatology, in Prague, Czech Republic, and the World Congress of Dermatology in Vancouver BC, Canada, Kalambakas, Greece, and Taupo, New Zealand.

Your Mediterranean voyage commences from Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, but the true overture to your adventure begins in the heart of the Eternal City itself. As dedicated professionals, you spend your days in structured, high-stakes environments. Rome offers the perfect antidote: a city where millennia of history, art, and culture converge in a vibrant, unscripted symphony of life. We strongly encourage you to arrive one or two days prior to embarkation, allowing you to decompress, acclimate to the time zone, and immerse yourself in a world far removed from your daily practice before your onboard conferences begin.
**Arriving and Settling In**
Upon landing at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you have several efficient options to reach the city center. The Leonardo Express train provides a direct, 32-minute journey to Termini Station, the city's main transport hub. Alternatively, licensed white city taxis offer a fixed fare to destinations within the Aurelian Walls. Securing a hotel in a central, walkable neighborhood like the area around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, or the charmingly bohemian Trastevere will place the city’s treasures at your doorstep.
**A Suggested 48-Hour Roman Prelude**
**Day 1: Imperial Grandeur and the Art of Living**
Begin your first day by stepping back two thousand years. We strongly recommend a guided tour here; the site is vast, and an expert can bring the silent stones of its villas, temples, and brothels to life. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona greets you with a vibrant energy, a city where the fantastical architecture of Catalan Modernisme coexists with the shadows of a deep Gothic past. Your day here is a study in captivating contrasts. The undeniable centerpiece is Antoni Gaudí's magnum opus, La Sagrada Familia. This basilica, a century-and-a-half in the making, is a breathtaking testament to faith and architectural genius that must be experienced from within to be truly understood. Palma De Mallorca, Spain
Palma de Mallorca is a pleasant surprise for many, offering a level of urban sophistication and history that far exceeds the typical Mediterranean island port. This is a genuinely rewarding stop, a compact and elegant city that beautifully balances grandeur with a relaxed seaside pace.
The city's soul is the magnificent Catedral-Basílica de Santa María, 'La Seu.' The primary draw is, of course, Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. A 75- to 90-minute journey by train or coach transports you to a city of overwhelming beauty. A day trip here demands a clear, focused plan. We strongly advise choosing one major museum—either the Uffizi Gallery for its masterpieces by Botticelli and Leonardo, or the Accademia Gallery to stand in awe before Michelangelo's David. Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:
A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
Your parent or child requires hospitalization
You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more
TRIP INTERRUPTION
Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:
You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care

TRAVEL DELAY
