Dereck DeLeon, MD, serves as Senior Vice President, Chief Academic Officer, and Designated Institutional Official at Cone Health in Greensboro, North Carolina. In this capacity, he oversees five residencies and fellowships, institutional research, and the integration of healthcare learners within the health system. Concurrently, he is the Executive Director of the Greensboro Area Health Education Center (AHEC), where he works across eight counties to bridge academic institutions and communities with a focus on improving healthcare for underserved populations.

Dr. DeLeon brings over two decades of experience in family medicine and medical education to his current roles. He spent 22 years as a Family Physician with Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, California, where he served as the Program Director for the Family Medicine Residency Program, the Southern California Regional Chair for Diversity in Graduate Medical Education, and Co-Chair of the San Diego Graduate Medical Education Committee. He also holds an appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Preventative Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

A passionate advocate for health equity, Dr. DeLeon is dedicated to developing community programs that introduce individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to healthcare professions. He helped pioneer the Kaiser Permanente/San Ysidro High School Summer Urban Fellowship, providing vital mentoring and role modeling for local high school, college, and medical students.

Dr. DeLeon has completed numerous fellowships in Leadership, Faculty Development, and Curriculum Design and Assessment. He is a recognized scholarly voice in medical education, having been an invited speaker at the AAFP Annual Scientific Assembly, the AAFP Program Directors Workshop, the UCSD School of Medicine, and the AAMC Minority Student Workshop.
