John R. Kalmar, DMD, PhD, is a staff oral pathologist with CTA Oral Pathology of Ohio in Columbus. He previously served as a Professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry for 26 years, retiring from his faculty position in 2025 to return to the private practice of surgical oral pathology. During his tenure at Ohio State, he served in multiple leadership capacities, including graduate Program Director in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Kalmar received his dental degree from Southern Illinois University. Following residencies in hospital dentistry at UNC-Chapel Hill and oral pathology at Emory University, he earned a PhD in Experimental Pathology at Emory. Before joining Ohio State in 1999, he served on the faculty of the Department of Pathology at the University of Rochester in New York for seven years.
A recognized leader in his field, Dr. Kalmar is a Diplomate and Past-President of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (ABOMP) and a Past-President of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP). He has published over 90 manuscripts and book chapters and enjoys providing continuing education to a wide variety of professional audiences.
