Most of his professional academic career was at The University of Iowa where he moved through the ranks to Full Professor of Urology with tenure. While at University of Iowa he helped to pioneer laparoscopic and robotic surgery in the field of urology. Based on this work as well as numerous scientific publications, he became nationally and internationally recognized in this area of surgery. He performed the first laparoscopic partial nephrectomy in the world and continued to be a leading force in minimally invasive surgery through the 1990’s to 2015.
Dr. Winfield was elected to the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons in 2001, was president of the Northcentral Section of AUA in 2011, and has received numerous awards for cutting edge publications and contributions to urology. He has been a Reviewer for many peer-review journals.
He has lectured and operated in medical centers throughout the world. In 2009, Dr. Winfield was recruited by DCH Health Authority in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to begin a robotic surgical program and to help improve the laparoscopic surgical options for patients with urologic disorders. This hospital-based urology practice has allowed pursuit of academic interests in the private practice setting. As such, Dr. Winfield continues his teaching interest as Adjunct Clinical Professor at University of Alabama.
